We recently showed you “12 iPhone Tricks You Might Not Know“, and we’re back to give you more. Due to all the great feedback our readers gave us, and some further iPhone experimentation (a.k.a. iPerimentation) on our part, we’ve found some other tips and tricks that can enhance your iPhone experience.
While you might find some of these iPhone tips and tricks elementary, I’m sure there’s atleast something on this list that you didn’t know of. And if you did, congrats iPhoner – now see how you stand up against the ultimate iPhone glossary.
1. Double tap space bar for a period -
When typing on your iPhone, double tapping the space bar at the end of a sentence automatically enters a period followed by a space. No need to press “123″ to get to the numbers and symbols page where the period typically resides. I use this trick daily and it heavily increases my typing speed (especially when texting).
2. Tap the bottom corner to navigate home screens
When on your home screen, try tapping the bottom right/left corner to switch between pages instead of swiping your finger accross the screen.
3. Take out your SIM card during backup and sync -
We’ve all experienced it. You’re backing up and syncing your iPhone, and the hour long back up is nearly complete. Then all of a sudden you get a phone call, and the whole back up/sync is null and void.
To avoid this happening, simply start the backup/sync, then pull out your SIM card. Do not worry, this does not damage your phone at all. Put it back in once everything is complete. This way, your backup won’t get interrupted.
This tip is also useful if you need to make a phone call while your iPhone is backing up/syncing. Since unlocking your phone cancels the process, just take out your SIM card, pop it in your old cell phone, and call away.
4. Move “dock” icons
You’d be surprised how often this tip is overlooked. The 4 icons located on the grey bar at the bottom of your iPhone – Phone, Mail, iPod, Safari – are movable, just like the rest of the icons. Just press and hold the icons, then drag them while they are shaking. Press the home button when you’re done. You can put any 4 icons on your dock.
In the screenshots, note the difference between pic 1 and 2.
5. Automatically capitalize and add apostrophes
The iPhone automatically capitalizes certain words (“I” when you type “i”). It also automatically adds apostrophes (“I’m” when you type “Im”).
6. Double tap a column on Safari to fit-to-page
When browsing the Internet on your iPhone’s Safari browser, double tap any column, word, or picture to fit it’s width to your iPhone’s screen. This is extremely useful for reading blogs.
The first screenshot is the page when it firsts load. The second screenshot is the page once the main text was double tapped.
7. Manually select the icon image for a bookmarked webpage
This one’s a little more confusing. When you are browsing a website on your iPhone’s Safari browser and want to add its icon to your home screen, press the plus sign and select “Add to Home Screen”.
The image in the icon, however, is a screenshot of the page you were on. So if you want the icon to look a specific way, zoom in on a particular item on the page. Whether you want the website’s logo, or some picture on the page, simply zoom in on that part of the page before you press “Add to Home Screen”.
Note: This doesn’t work with all websites. Popular sites like Google have special icons for the iPhone’s home screen.
Go to your website of choice.
Zoom in on your favorite part.
Press the + sign and choose Add to Home Screen.
Name the bookmark appropriately (Digg – Apple).
Now that exact part of the webpage is displayed in your icon.
8. Your iPhone’s headphones have a multi-function button!
You’d be surprised how many people don’t know that the iPhone’s native headphones have a button on the microphone.
Just squeeze the microphone together, and the button gets pressed.
The buttons functions:
In call…
- Press once to answer a call
- Press twice to send the call to voicemail
- Press once to hang up a call
In call while second call coming in… [thank you silver0fox]
- click once to hold current call and switch to new call
- hold for 2 secs and release to ignore new call
Out of call…
- Press once to activate iPod and play song
- Press once to pause song
- Press twice to skip to next song
Using these 8 tips will not only increase your iPhone IQ, but improve your overall iPhone experience. For more iPhone tips and tricks, check out our older article “12 iPhone Tricks You May Not Know“.
Be sure to share your new found knowledge (or atleast inform people that their iPhone’s headphones have a button).

Pandora’s Lockbox: 5 alternatives to the popular radio AppPandora is one of the most popular and beloved iPhone Apps in existence. And why not? It’s free, customizable streaming radio! Unfortunately, the RIAA may be closing the lid on Pandora as ridiculous royalty fees continue to suck the company dry. But fear not, radio enthusiasts, as we have five Apps that may be able to fill that inevitable void. |

yay my tip is in there!! (#7)
If you go to the mobile digg website (http://m.digg.com) it will use its own icon when saving to the home screen. You will have to use the method mentioned above if you want to bookmark the main digg site.
Re #2: Tap the bottom corner to navigate home screens. It doesn’t have to be on the far corner, as long as it’s left or right from the center. I use it all the time to navigate from around the screens with one hand.
I just want to turn off the autocorrect. Is there a trick to that? If i send out another text that says ‘tuck’ instead of ‘fuck’, i may break my tucking iphone
Thanks for #7, that’s new to me.
For #3, could you use airplane mode instead?
LOL @ #8 – I knew that button did all of that…….
but I didn’t know it was a f—ing MICROPHONE too
Seriously :/
Thanks for #8 – didn’t know it was a button! However I did know it was a microphone, now who’s more silly, Adam or Me?
turn your calculator side way to get more!!!
” Take out your SIM card during backup and sync -”
Why not just put it in airplane mode?
LOL @ #3
You don’t need to take out SIM card. Just put your phone in Airplane mode while you do a backup
Thanks for the tips though. Knew them all from playing with the iPhone for eight months now.
Is there *anything* the iPhone won’t do? Is there a secret button press that makes it spew out hot crispy bacon or something?
“I just want to turn off the autocorrect. Is there a trick to that? If i send out another text that says ‘tuck’ instead of ‘fuck’, i may break my tucking iphone”
Why not teach your iPhone how to spell “fuck”?
–Just type it in, and wait for your correction to come up, and click on the x, to dismiss it. After a while, it will learn the word.
Dude the IPHone totally ROCKS! Hands down best phone ever.
JT
“URL TROLL WAS HERE”
Pretty cool; the double tap space bar hint is especially great.
The problem with #7 is that when you load that bookmark it will open up zoomed to the same zoom level.
Addition to #5: If you want to type “We’ll”, type in the letters W-E-L-L-L (extra L). This is a way to differentiate “well” from “we’ll”. This also works with WERE + WE’RE
I’ve recently had the incoming call cancel my sync backup because of the annoyingly long backup time. If I just want to transfer songs or apps (or if I’m in a hurry) I’ll cancel the backup process, then it will sync everything else.
But, I wanted to upgrade to the 2.0.1 software, so I put the phone in Airplane mode to avoid a call that’d stop the process. After the installation I got the screen telling me to plug it in to iTunes, but it already was! iTunes couldn’t recognize my iPhone for some reason. It took me a while to get it working. All I could do was go to the screen that let me make an emergency call. I tried restarting everthing, unplugging & plugging multiple times.
iTunes kept saying the phone was locked. I tried making an emergency call and the phone told me it was in airplane mode, should it exit out of that mode to make a call? Clicking OK got it unlocked and syncing when smoothly from there.
These tricks suck; I’m a first time iphone owner/user and I’ve had it for less than a week and I knew about these “tricks”. Weak sauce.
Thanks for the tips, I didn’t know about the spacebar period one!
Michelle
Unplugging your headphones will close the current app (iPod or otherwise).
One cool trick I found was by double clicking the home button while the phone is off or displaying the “slide to unlock” message brings up the rewind, play, fast-forward, and volume controls for the ipod application. You can then press play and rock out or pause the song already playing.
guys i was trying #8 but it is not working at all, help please!
Thanks for the tips!
Who the hell didn’t know these ‘no brainers’?
HAH you newbs.
ooooh! oooooooh! I got one!
You can press on the green icon at the bottom left – it has telephone-like features!
You forgot the “pull out your headphones to pause the music one”
If you click the headphone button 3 times in iPod mode, it will skip back a track.
A slight change to the iphone earphones
If you triple click it, restarts the song your listenng, and if you do it straight after a song starts it goes to the previous song
addition to #8:
press three times to skip backwards to the beginning/previous song. AWESOME!!
#9 (works with any iPod too)
Unplug the headphone to pause playback of the music or video. Sometimes that’s quicker when you don’t have an Apple headphone with button (tip #8).
#10:
Dial *3001#12345#* (and then pick up the call) to get network and cell info. Doesn’t cost a cent.
If you press the microphone 3 times, it goes to the previous song that was playing.
you can triple click the button on teh headphones to go back to previous songs when in IPOD mode..
you learn something new everyday ! !
Who the hell didn’t know these ‘no brainers’?
I think Johnson and WOW
Along with the headphone tips (sorry if it was already mentioned) you don’t have to unlock your phone at all to play music. Press the button once and your phone will kick in to whatever song you were playing last (ever) and it will start wherever it left off. I love this phone!
i was not able to run I Tunes in my system
what all the things are necessart to run it, once i did,its seeekinh for credit card number pls help me
Don’t forget with firmware 2.1+ you can click the clicker (on the headphones) 3 times to go backwards
!
In stead of pullin out the sim card, we cud just use the Airplane mode…
nice tricks..keep up the good work…
with the iphone headphone….while listening to music….pressing the headphones together 3 times will restart the song…pressing it 3 more times will play the previous song…….add that to the list
iRock
tip 8
* Press once to activate iPod and play song
* Press once to pause song
* Press twice to skip to next song
press three times to start song again or jump back to previous song
press the headphone buttom 3 times to go back a song.
Another tip for headphones
:p
:s
Tapp 3 times while listening to a song to re-start the song
another 3 times to to play previous song!!
there’s one more!
“Out of call…
Press once to activate iPod and play song
Press once to pause song
Press twice to skip to next song”
PRESS THREE TIMES AND JUMPS BACK TO THE PREVIOUS SONG!
You didn’t mention that if you are playing a song on your iPhone, you can click the multi-function button on your headphones 3 times to use it as a replay/previous song button.
8. Your iPhone’s headphones have a multi-function button!
You’d be surprised how many people don’t know that the iPhone’s native headphones have a button on the microphone.
Just squeeze the microphone together, and the button gets pressed.
The buttons functions:
In call…
o Press once to answer a call
o Press twice to send the call to voicemail
o Press once to hang up a call
In call while second call coming in… [thank you silver0fox]
o click once to hold current call and switch to new call
o hold for 2 secs and release to ignore new call
Out of call…
* Press once to activate iPod and play song
* Press once to pause song
* Press twice to skip to next song
* PRESS 3 TIMES GO TO PREVIOUS SONG
Thanks for the tips, i love the headphone button, its a great addition.
AWSOME,I WOULD ALWAYS UNPLUG MY HEADPHONES WHEN I GOT AN INCOMMING CALL, HAD NO IDEA THAT WAS THERE
I found another feature for the button on the earbuds. If you click it three times in rapid succession, it goes to the previous track. If you click it four times, it goes to the beginning of the current track and pauses. I don’t k ow if that’s actually one of the sequences or a glitch, but it works.
also..
press multi-function button on headphones cord 3 times to go one song back..(rewind)
#8 If you press the button 3 times it’ll return to the beginning of the song and if you press it three times at the beginning of the song it’ll go to the previous track. No more opening the iPod app just to rewind.
Addition to #8:
Out of call:
Tap 3 times to rewind to beginning of song or move back to previous song (if already at beginning of current song)
These 8 tips are very practical. Tip 3 is funny, removing the SIM:)
For #8, click it 3 times to go to the previous song.
If you click the microphone button on the headset three times, it will go to the previous song.
ADDITION TO #8:
While listening to iTunes, press the mic button 3 times to restart track. If you’re already at the beginning of the track you will skip to the previous track.
If you press the pinch switch on the head phones three times you can go back to the begining of the song, pressing it three times again will bring you to the previous song. It can be a bitch, but it does work.
Cold weather also makes this pinch switch, or what ever you want to call it very tricky.
You can also click the iPhone headphone/mic button 3 times in sequence for previous track. (Note: if you’re more than a few seconds into a song, it will restart the current song. 3 more clciks at that point will go to the previous song).
Cheers!
gracias loco, lo el doble espacio no lo sabia, 11 puntos.
thank you man! I didn¬¥t know that about the “doble space bar tap” 11 points
Here in argentina we say:
¬°Sos grosso, sabelo! (¬°You are great, know it!
or something like, im not sure)
@goosefrahbah:
The iPhone won’t actually learn fuck or other swear words.
The trick is, create new contacts (making sure the names are lower case) called ‘fuck’, ‘shit’, etc. and they’ll stop auto-correcting
Out of call…
Press once to activate iPod and play song
Press once to pause song
Press twice to skip to next song
And….
press three times quickly to switch to the previous song
Actually, you are close with #8, but the”hold for 2 secs and release to ignore new call” hint submitted by silver0fox is inaccurate. The manual says “Press and hold for about two seconds, then let go. When you let go, two low beeps confirm you ended the first call.”
So it’s click and hold to hang up the first and answer the second call,… not to ignore it.
Here’s one that’s not on the list! On any screen, if you want to take a screen shot and save it. Push the home and power button simoltaniously. It’s like a print screen button on your pc keyboard, only it saves it right to your photo folder.
is there a backspace button duuuhh I feel really dumb now
wow unless you truly didn’t read the quick guide this excerpt is void… though step 6 is quite sexy

Though serving as a tech agent i can highly recommend NOT removing your SIM card while backing up, restoring or syncing in any manner. If it truly becomes a necessity, then definitely put your phone into airplane mode which is the equivalent of shutting off the GSM radio. (I know a million people already said that
Most useful thing i saw in here was the post about using three “L”s in well to change to we’ll
great job guys

this was actually covered on the previous page, but great job!
@Daniel Brierton
actually my phone loves the words “fuck” , “shit” and “dicklipfucker” and uses them in a very optimal way
the iphone doesn’t necessarily learn a word the first time you use it, sometimes it is necessary to close the corrections box several times. It’s more for convenience, say you use the word duck a lot, those occasional few times you need to use fuck will weigh against your use of duck and ultimately keep correcting it to duck
If you use the button on your headphones, if you click it three times it will go to the previous song
Critical addition to #8 … hit the button 3 times … and it goes to the previous song.
Enjoy,
-manu
Mah sis-in-law told me ’bout this site. Awesome tips. It amazes me that Apple wouldn’t add this to the manual and blogs like this to get the news out. Wha-a-ta mai-da-me
In regards to trick number 3. I always put my phone in airplane mode to avoid any interruptions. That has to be better than removing the sim card
I got the best trick.
In iPhone Safari browser, tap the signal bar on the top left corner to quickly scroll page to the very top (similar to Ctrl + Home on a PC). This applies to iPhone OS 3.0+ maybe even earlier version.
Do I win any prize?
Actually, tap anywhere on the top bar will do the trick.
U can also press it three times to go to previous song
Another trick with the mic/button.
Press and hold, then double-press to go back to previous song.
Does anyone know how to scroll ahead in the middle of a song. Say I have a 30 minute piece and want to skip to the midde, how can I quickly get there the way I can with videos? This would be good in Audiobooks too, some of the chapters are an hour and half long.
Pretty good article , you really do the very useful information , thank you for your good work, here I have another good share: tradestead
there are many kinds of beautiful and powerful consumer electronics that I like it very much!
you are rite. just switch on the airplane mode. and do the needful.
Shyam.
its a great web site for my iPhone 3G
- Avijit
HOW MANY TIMES ARE YOU PEOPLE GOING TO CORRECT NUMBER 8?!
i bet none of u knew this:
double click and then hold to fast forward
triple click and then hold to rewind.
AND if u are not using the native headphones that come with iphone, u dont have to pluck out ur headphone to pick up a call. just take out one of the ear piece n hold the phone as u wld pick up a regular call. u can hear the caller through your other ear piece and he/she can still hear u talk.
for number 3, i.e. taking out sim while syncing to avoid cancelling sync – it is easier to turn the phone to airplane mode under settings. this prevents phone calls until u turn off the airplane mode after ur done syncing
I’m really surprised nobody mentioned that if you hold down the headset button for 3 seconds, then your phone 3GS goes into voice control mode. this works with the ipod playing or not.
In addition to ‘Press twice to skip to next song’, if current track has just played for a few seconds, pressing 3x will play previous track. Repeat track if in the middle or end of playing track.
JUST IN CASE YOU DIDN’T SEE THE 35 CORRECTION’s TO #8, IF YOU PUSH IT 3 TIMES, IT WILL PLAY THE PREVIOUS TRACK!
A great list of tips thanks
WITH THE HEADPHONES: HOLD THE MIC BUTTON AND IT GOES TO VOICE CONTROL.
clicking 3 times is enough, no need to hold
write ‘fuck’ it gets changed and correct it right away again.
It won’t “correct” it twice
I believe that was 3 short clicks, 2 long, 1 short, 2 long again and finish with 3 shorts*
*Might not work until you’ve modified your iPhone a bit to much
Great!! Fantastic thanks to much dude
takeout the simcard or turn to airplane mode while syncing is stupid and not user friendly. why cant iphone have this basic multi task; syncing while making a call?
Auto correction….
Disable or off the function,..
setting>general>keyboard>auto correction=off
Try to press the mic button once press
again and hold to go fast forward.
Press twice press again and hold to go
fast back.
On the headset, if you tap it 3 times during the ipod playback, it goes to the beginning of the current song. Do it again immediately, and it goes back to the previous song.
Double taping the headset also works in skipping in Pandora.
I meant double “tapping”. ;-}
press the microphone button thrice to go to previous song..press the button twice and hold to forward…press the button thrice and hold to rewind
Y’know something! Pressing the button on your earpiece thrice will ‘Go Back’ to the previous song you’ve played while you’re listening to iPod.
Hope this tip works!
wow omg…. stop putting the addition to #8 on there i counted 43 different posts adding that if you push the button 3 times it goes back to the previous song, i guess someone pushed the repeat posting mode for the website, seriously go back and look
Press 3 times on your headphone to go back to the song that was before
iPhone’s Magic Little Headphones Button
Apple packs a lot of functionality into that little button on your iPhone headphones! There are

Does anyone know what happens if you press the headphone button 3 times?
Not sure if anyone mentioned it: clicking in the headphone button three times will skip back to the previous song (or the beginning of the song you’re listening to, depends on how far along you are).
if your triple click headphone button while playing music it will go back one song.
If you press the microphone button three times to go back a song
I want to know how to make my screen turn side ways to use the query keyboard, Across the whole screen right now, I turn my iPhone and the key board stays the same also to better view pictures I think I block that.
