You know we are staunch supporters of jailbreaking. And why not? Jailbroken iPhones can do so much. They can even block most ads on Mobile Safari.
Follow these steps to enjoy a largely commercial-free browsing experience on your iPhone:
- Jailbreak your iPhone (We can show you how, with QuickPwn or Pwnage Tool)
- Go to Cydia, click Search, and type in OpenSSH
- Install OpenSSH, then reboot your iPhone
- Once your iPhone restarts, go to Settings, then Wi-Fi, and write down the IP address
- Go back to Settings, click General, and set the Auto-Lock to Never
- Download the replacement hosts file on your computer
- Open your FTP client (FileZilla for Windows users; Cyberduck for Mac users) and set to connect through an SFTP connection and type in the iPhone’s IP addres as the host
- Go to the /etc folder and move the hosts file to a secure place on your computer
- Copy the altered hosts file to your iPhone, then restart your device
Keep in mind that some sites (such as the New York Times) are immune to this hack, but you will be ad-free on plenty of other sites with this hack.

The over the air method was easier. Maybe I just don’t know FTP clients well enough. Thanks!
