The Japanese market has not been receptive to the iPhone due to its inability to support emoji.  But developers have found some hidden features in the iPhone 2.2 firmware beta, one of them being emoji support:

The addition of emoji support on the 2.2 firmware will surely give the iPhone the boost it needs in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Other surprises discovered on the 2.2 firmware beta include Google Street View support and disabling the auto-correction function:

The release date for the 2.2 firmware has not yet been announced.
