The long-awaited iPhone OS 3.0 firmware, which is officially going to be released Wednesday June 17th, has been fully leaked into the torrent realm. The firmware, which has been available only to registered iPhone developers, is now (thanks to the leak called "iPhone OS 3.0 Golden Master") ready to be safely used by any iPhone user. It really works (and it's great!)
Warning: Do this at your own risk.
It will work for 1st generation iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch users.
Here's how you do it:
1. Download the torrent Go to any famous torrent site, and search for the following:
– 1st generation iPhone users: iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
- iPhone 3G users: iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
– iPod Touch users: iPod2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
If these search results don't give you any results (because torrents are always changing) search "iPhone OS 3.0" or "iPhone OS 3.0 Golden Master". You'll see "7A341" in the title. It should be about 230 MB.
2. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes
3. Sync and back-up your iPhone This is incredibly important. If you don't do this, you will lose all the stuff on your phone. Also, if something goes wrong, this way you can always safely go back.
4. SHIFT+ Restore (ALT + Update for Mac) Hold down shift or alt (PC/Mac) and press "Update" in iTunes after your iPhone is connected. A browser window will pop up. Select the file with the picture of the disk that you have just downlodaed via torrent. It should be called "iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw" or the variations of it seen above.
5. Let it work iTunes will verify the software, and then it will automatically start restoring and updating the phone (but now with the 3.0 firmware). Allow iTunes to install all your data and sync your stuff (contacts, music, apps, etc…)
Remember, if your iPhone is unlocked (aka if you're using it with T-Mobile or some other non-AT&T provider) then updating the firmware will undo the unlock because it upgrades the baseband. Do not do this if you are using an unlocked iPhone. If your iPhone is jailbroken, updating to 3.0 will undo the jailbreak (until the Dev guys figure out how to jailbreak 3.0, which shouldn't take long), so it's your decision based on what you prefer – 3.0 or a jailbroken phone. The process is safe, easy, and quick. Let us know how it worked out for you in the comments!

Starting to wonder if it’s worth having an UN-jail roken iPhone… Considering the 3g and 2g models don’t get of the ‘performance’ fixes that’s been talked about :-/
Anyone upgrade to 3.0 after having jailbroken 2.2.1? I’m wondering your thoughts on this..
Step 4: You should be able to use the Upgrade button (with the shift as well) instead of restore. This will not need to then copy all of your music and data back to the device. I did restore but my friend tried upgrade and it worked fine as well. Definitely drops the time it takes.
Alex, I was wondering where I can find the ‘Upgrade’ button.. Only ‘Restore’ & ‘Check for update’ buttons are available!
Thanks Alex, i wish i would have known that earlier… i am sitting here installing now…. From restore
AH yes that would have helped! i installed it…however it did not add my apps or any of my data. SO i am not restoring my phone to my last back. Thanks for the information. I will try again when my phone is restored which takes AWHILE!!!
My upgrade was successfull (using the restore function, so I need to resynchronize my apps and music), and I get some 3.0 features like copy/paste, but some are missing, like the tethering application, the video recorder…
Is this normal ? A sign that this is a pre-release build ? Or is this because I missed something during the update process ?
@ Nicolas – some features of 3.0 are for iPhone 3GS, so you do not get video recording on your 3G (yes, it makes no sense)
I Had a successful upgrade to 3.0. This was an upgrade from a jailbroken Iphone 3G with a 2.2.1 firmware. Everything went fine and I now have the new features. Although I can’t figure out how to do the MMS messaging yet. Beside that, everything is A OK, now it’s just a wait for the DEV team to come out with a Jailbreak for 3.0.
If I upgrade my iPhone 3G to this software, when 3.0 is released, will iTunes upgrade my iPhone to the software from Apple’s servers?
To upgrade instead of restore, hold down the alt key (or shift on PC) and select “Check for Update.” This will let you select the file.
No luck. I keep getting error 10 in itunes. Do you have any suggestions?
ive downloaded it and 3.0 GM works perfectly for me =]
i really dislike that the iphone 1g cant send and recieve MMS tho
Hmmm… didnt have much luck. Even tried DFU mode but no go. When I do the shift+click restore and give it hte file it says “The iPhone could not be resotred because the firmware file is not compatible” yet the file is iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ispw and I have a 3G.
Going to try another torrent, but the checksum was fine on this one
Brad, I think you need to ensure you’ve got the latest version of iTunes (8.2) as anything earlier is incompatible with OS 3.0; just a suggestion in case you haven’t tried it. I’m installing 8.2; was having the same trouble but I think I figured it out via Google.
You might want to add “MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ITUNES 8.2″ somewhere prominent in the guide.
In caps.
Red font.
Bold….
*sigh* restoring for the 4th time…
So can we manually install the official release? iTunes is telling me that mine is already up to date.
I was using 8.2, so that wasnt the issue. The second IPSW I downloaded got about 80% done and locked up. Gave up, went to bed. Then in the morning the official 3.0 was out. So I just installed that
Thanks for the advice anyhow
works like a charm, updated to 2.2.1 then 3.0
and still able to call
I just updated my iphone 2G 1.1.4 (jailbreak) to 3.0 without any problem, now just hope the great dev team get the 3.0 jailbreak!!!
GO DEV!
Works for iPod touch 2g with original firmware 2.2.1. Did a fresh update.
You can even update to the new 3.1.1 after the 3.0 OS install.
Thanks.
Sir please help me i didn’t back up my iphone then when i try to update i got an error. then now my phone is empty nor less the OS please advice what to do
