The guide below still works but it is obsolete by the redsn0w for iPhone 3.0 use guide above
We posted a how-to guide earlier today explaining how to jailbreak your iPhone 3.0 on a Mac using the newly released Pwnage Tool 3.0. However, many of you iPhoners don’t have Macs, and some of you just don’t want to deal with the Pwnage Tool application. Well, we found a functional .IPSW file for jailbroken 3.0 with Cydia and ICY on it on the web (it works, we confirmed it), so all you have to do is download it and restore your iPhone with the file.
Here’s how it works:

NOTE: some people are getting dreaded 1600 errors in iTunes. We found the solution and it has been tested on 2G and 3G. If any issues post them in comments. Usual disclaimer applies: use at your own risk.
This method does not unlock your phone it jailbreaks it (if you are using yellowsn0w to make calls, wait for ultrasn0w). Ultrasn0w, unlocking app from Dev-Team will be out soon and available via Cydia.
Read comments first, some users getting no signal after jailbreak. If that is the case with you, you can restore using original 3.0
Issue above is due to using firmware file with activation option enabled, it will cause issue with legitimate sims. So if you are using a legitimate SIM card, let’s say from ATT and you are on ATT network you need to download firmware file without activation enabled. This is confirmed here.
1. Make sure you have the newest iTunes (iTunes 8.2)
2. Back up your iPhone
- Connect your iPhone to iTunes
- Put your phone in airplane mode (calls/texts disrupt the process and make you start over)
- Right click your iPhone
- Press Back Up
3. Download the file
Files below are trusted and have been tested, they have been created using pwnagetool 3.0 on Mac
For iPhone 3G: as per issues use this if you have legitimate SIM http://www.filefactory.com/file/ag76d11/n/iPhone1_2_3_0_7A341_Custom_Restore_Not_Activated_ipsw use this in other cases http://www.filefactory.com/ For iPhone 2G (Original iPhone): No issues with no signal reported for iPhone 2G http://www.filefactory.com/ 4. Put your iPhone in DFU Mode (Standard Method will not work). You may try getting into DFU familiar way. If you get error 1600 or similar error use method below.
Note: You do not need to downgrade to iTunes 8.1 , continue using iTunes 8.2 and No need to downgrade your iPhone (ignore what others are saying) a) Install QuickPwn RC3 b) Follow the process until you get to the white screen (to use use QuickPwn RC3 you will need 2.0.2 firmware find files you need here and if you are using iPhone 2G you will need Boot loader Files) Fire-up QuickPwn RC3 and select 2.0.2 firmware file you have downloaded earlier Simply go to the next step after firmware checkes out, select location for modified firmware file (we will not need it, so you can junk it later on) Use defaults, we just going through this process in order to get to DFU Mode Connect your iPhone to USB cable, click next Follow on screen directions About this time, your iPhone’s screen will turn white (see pic)
c) Be quick as soon as you get to the white screen, quit QuickPwn, fire up iTunes, no need to unplug USB cable.
Timing is everything, so make sure you have a timer. It will take you a few tries to get it right. If you performed the steps above correctly you will see this message in iTunes (it’ll automatically open): 5. Hold Shift and Click Restore 6. Select the file you just downloaded Make sure to select correct file. see notes above covering this. 7. Let iTunes Work
That’s it! You’re running a jailbroken iPhone 3.0. Note: You may get a 1601 or 1602 or 1600 or 1604 or 1605 error. If this occurs, you did not follow steps exactly. You have to have white screen on our iPhone when connecting to iTunes.

I tried with my iPhone 3G running the 3.0, and got all the way to the error message..Its a shame because right up to the software Extraction and I thought it was going to work..
I’ll give it a few weeks to wait and see what more developments happen – its early days yet.
I was a bit freaked – thought I was going to Brick (The phone AND my pants!) But it reverted back to the Backup I made.
Some people getting 1600 errors, we are testing work around.
I dont think you need to use QuickPwn for this. You can simply use the custom cooked firmware 3.0 with iTunes to get it done for you. It worked for me without having to use QuickPwn. I have also written a guide on how I got it to unlock and jailbreak on my PC:
I also got the 1600 error. 2G iPhone, previously boot neutered, already upgraded to 3.0 but not getting location or youtube. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the latest iTunes, will try again…
Nope, with fresh iTunes install, latest version, tried again and still got 1600 error. I was definitely in DFU mode, of the last couple of years with a hacked iPhone I can now enter DFU mode in my sleep… Fortunately a reset brings the iPhone back to working again on 3.0, so no fears on that front.
What if I try a straight shift-restore from normal iPhone mode?
I keep getting 1604 error.
I’ve tried iTunes 8.1, and the latest version.

Seems to be working. Had the iPhone plugged in with usb, iTunes on, iPhone just on it’s normal home screen, NO DFU MODE, shift restore using the custom ipsw… and it’s going thru the usual process of restoring… Looks like it’ll work. I’ll report back once it’s done.
Nope, fail. This time with error 1604. I’ll try the steps outlined by iSmashPhone above.
All of you who are getting the 1600/1604/etc errors–have you all had jailbreaks/unlocks before? I’m wondering if the people who aren’t getting getting the error are using “virgin” iPhones?
This works to bypass 1600 iTunes errors
1. Downgrade to iTunes 8.1
2. No need to downgrade your iPhone (ignore what others are saying)
3. Install QuickPwn RC3
4. Follow the process until you get white screen (to use use QuickPwn RC3 you will need 2.0.2 firmware find files you need here)
5. Be quick as soon as you get white screen, unplug iPhone, quit QuickPwn, fire up iTunes
6. Start STEP 5 from above
will test if iTunes downgrade is required

However, I’m not sure I really understand the procedure with QuickPwn RC3. What do I do exactly with QuickPwn RC3? How is it possible to install the new Firmware if I unplug my iphone? I guess I have to plug it again once itunes I’ve launched itunes but I think I don’t get it.

It took longer then expected to figure it our since went WinPwn route first and just gave up on it. Unofficial (not sanctioned by Dev-Team) QuickPwn RC3 to the rescue.
It’s possible that older quickpwn 2.1 from Dev-Team will work, but really cannot test it at this time.
The WHITE SCREEN is the key.

Everything seems to have worked fine. ONLY I am showing NO signals (or No Service) and cannot make calls. Call failed each time. Under phone settings it says my phone number is unknown and I cannot save my number. Can anyone help with this. Thanks.
Let’s only hope that you do not need unlock to use your phone. There is no unlock for 3.0 at this time. ultrasn0w unlocking app will be out soon.
if above is not your issue, try turning your phone off and on.
I got JB 3.0 for Windows installed, everything went great except I can’t make or receive phone calls :/ … I had one bar and under settings the carrier sad none. I rebooted, now I get No Sim. Reseating does noting, rebooting does nothing, errrr
Would you need to unlock the phone to work with AT&T?

Thanks for the quick help. I’ve never had my phone unlocked. Only jailbroken. I’m still tied to my carrier. Same thing, one bar, no service. Everything else is jailbroken and fine. Even after reboot.

No, if issue persists you can restore back to original 3.0.
Tested this with 2.0 and 3G no problems with connection.

I restored to an untouched 3.0 and was able to activate with AT&T, make and receive calls, so this won’t break the phone and you can go back!!!
Affirm. I can do everything. Full signal, can call, text, etc. Youtube, location, push. Everything on 3.0 for the 2G iPhone is working great.
For those who have problems with the service, you can revert back no issue just tested out, so as other users.

for the people who do not have a signal use this for the custom firmware instead of the one provided. so follow all of the directions except when you restore in itunes use this file. i had the same problem but this file jailbreaks the phone without activating it.

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH, IT WORKS 100%, And your right Timing is key, please people remember to follow the steps on your iphone as the program is going through it, the “WHITE SCREEN” will come up at the very last minute when it says “Uploading Exploit Bootloader” , then just quit and open iTunes right away without disconnnecting the iphone.
Curtis you da man, the file we provided had activation enable and that was causing the issue with signal. That specific problem was confirmed (see all the notes in the guide)

i am having the same problem. not an unlocker, but after JB-ing, have no signal (looks like just one bar in the corner, but can’t make calls). gonna try one more time before restoring to 3.0
we updated the guide, the issue is when you use firmware with activation selected gotta use one without that option unable. This fix is confirmed by several people. good luck

try with different firmware file, make sure to read the guide again because it may have changed
on itunes 8.2 the shift+ restore procedure does not work. its as if im not pressing shift at all. and yes i have confirmed that my shift key is working.

I was getting 1600 error messages with itunes trying to just shift+restore in dfu mode on a clean install of 3.0 on my 2g iphone. Eventually my iphone stopped booting and just loaded the “Connect to Itunes” screen. still getting 1600 error screen.
Using the quickpwn RC3 trick above, i have managed to ressurect my iphone straight to the custom firmware, not to a clean one first.

Looks like the custom firmware breaks 3G access. Everything works fine if you have a legit sim using the no activation ipsw but when you turn off wifi you cannot access 3G.
Did you use the correct file? Maybe you should use the first one ‘not activated’?

if you follow the instructions to the dot itll work i used a different package which was already loaded with an unlocker and other fun stuff worked like a charm
Each hphone sold in my country must be unlocked meaning my iPhone is factory unlocked n can be used with any telco. Anyway, was just wondering which ipsw to use… Legitimate or the other one, thanks.

I didn’t understand why to do this way. Just use redsnow with your ORIGINAL ipsw 3.0 file (find folder “iPod Software Updates” somewhere your system user files).
Just take a few minutes (3 or 4 minutes).
Just adding: here in Brazil we can, by law, change carriers as we wish (you just have to ask for unlocking in the carrier where you bought it and wait for 2 or 3 days).
I used first 2G link and it worked. However it says I am not on a data plan and cannot use U tube, internet or email except through WIFI? Any suggestions? Help Pleaz
Used redsnOw, checked box to unlock and put in Cydia. Since then phone just gets stuck on Apple logo and circle in the center of the screen. Any Ideas?

Thank you! I spent 6 hours trying to get my phone upgraded and spent 3 days without it since I upgraded too quickly (like a n00b, even though I’ve been jailbreaking and unlocking since 1.0.2) and this method worked! only took 2 tries!
After a few more tries it finally went it right. Everything appears to be working. Had to use two computers. Old windows computer using QuickPWN RC3, and my iBook G4 running iTunes 8.2 to install firmware. Thanx Dev Team and everyone for all your hard work. Been hacking my iPhone since 1.02. It’s getting easier as time goes by thanx to your efforts.

Unfreakingbelievable!! It works!!! No 1600, no 1601, no 1604 errors. White screen was the key. Wow, I’ve been working on this for 2 days now. Googled everything in sight. I now know more about quickpwn than I ever wanted to know. Man, this 1600 message was kicking my ass.
The funny thing is the more Apple does to prevent me from unlocking my phone, the more I learn about ways to unlock my phone.

I am running firmware 3.0 (7a431) on my iPhone – i have tried quickpwn and redsn0w with no success it appears that my iPhone wont go into DFU mode, i have tried reverting back to 2.2.1 and many times trying different ways of getting it into DFU mode with no success anyone else experienced this or no of the answer?

I tried the above said method ,but couldnt get a jailbroken iPhone.Instead the screen with the “Itunes and Cable” logo is displayed,which means its still not jailbroken.Incidentally,the quickpwn logo comes when the phone is being restored,but still no luck.

Yeah it does work!
But if you do it slightly incorrectly, it will load the normal boot loader instead of the exploited one which will give the 16xx error when you try upload.
If you don’t see the white screen, you did it wrong.
