If you're an iPhone junkie who sat salivating throughout the entire WWDC liveblog today, then chances are you already own an iPhone 3G…and chances are, you're wondering what it'll cost you to get the new iPhone 3G S if you already have an iPhone 3G.
Note: This applies to all AT&T customers who signed a 2-year contract. It doesn't matter if you have an iPhone 3G or some rinky-dink flip phone. It's all about how much time is left in your contract, not what phone you have.
Here's the deal (for all AT&T customers who signed a two-year contract):
If you have been under the AT&T contract for less than 6 months…
- iPhone 3G S (16GB) – $599
- iPhone 3G S (32GB) – $699
If you have been under the AT&T contract for more than 6 months but less than 18 months…
- iPhone 3G S (16GB) – $399
- iPhone 3G S (32GB) – $499
If you have been under that AT&T contract for more than 18 months…
- iPhone 3G S (16GB) – $199
- iPhone 3G S (32GB) – $299
Again, if you are the current owner of an iPhone or iPhone 3G with an AT&T contract, it does not give you any benefit monetarily when it comes to purchasing the iPhone 3G S. There is no such thing as an "iPhone upgrade". It all depends on how much time you have spent in the AT&T contract, and what kind of upgrade you are eligible for.
There is also a standard $18 upgrade fee.
If you are new to AT&T (and sign a fresh 2 year contract upon purchase of the iPhone)…
- iPhone 3G S (16GB) – $199
- iPhone 3G S (32GB) – $299
- iPhone 3G (8GB) - $99

Yes, but… do I have to extend my contract to get the reduced price or is this an outright purchase that does not alter my existing contract?
