Red Laser is a great little iPhone app that allows you to scan bar codes and then do several different things. You can instantly access a bunch of online prices and information, beam movies to your TiVo, read book reviews, add a food item to a grocery list, and more. The best part is, it actually works. Go here to read our full review of Red Laser. Get it here from the App Store, for $1.99. The developers, Occipital, have decided to release an updated beta version with extra features for free for jailbreakers via Cydia.
Here's a list of the new features available in the updated version, dubbed Red Laser 2.2b. These features will soon all be available in an updated version of Red Laser in the iTunes App Store.
- It now scans completely in real time on every model iPhone and supports the international EAN barcode format
- Huge product database (>1 million items) to supplement when Google product search fails.
- Web developers, check this out: You can embed a RedLaser link in your webpage and if RedLaser is installed, it will allow your webpage to scan a barcode.
Here's a sample URL (just tap this in your iPhone's Mobile Safari w/ RedLaser installed!): Scan and Search Amazon with RedLaser.
To get the cool new version of Red Laser, jailbreak your iPhone by following this guide, and then follow the following repository link: http://apt.thebigboss.org/

I tried the app this morning too, and was really impressed with it, we tried to catch it out on the most random objects like drawing pins and it found a match, most books and even cup-a-soup
I bought this app. It has not once worked. Never recognizing any bar code I tried. Easy stuff too. Total waste.
some people have problems with it, looks like it’s a camera issue and lack of that product in a database. 3GS owners have better expirience since camera can focus much better on the barcode.
In their jailbreak version they added database with more barcodes, they will get that upgrade into app store eventually.
Definitely should try it again after upgrade
Yes, please note that we haven’t been able to update the App Store version yet. I really think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the updates when they are finally allowed onto the store.
I bought the app when I used the iPhone 3G. I now have a 3Gs (better camera) and I reinstalled Red Laser on the 3Gs when I came across this article. Snapped a bunch of codes – not one usable – AGAIN.
it’s the app. Doesn’t work.
i have the 3gs and this app works perfect. you have to read the on screen instructions and tap and hold the screen so it can autofocus.. gl hope this helps.
Hey dude,
I just found this app and tried on my 3GS to scan Q-tips box and Dentek floss. It works like a charm.
You need to click on lightning button. The bar code will be captured automatically with a beep.
This works great in CAPTURING the UPC code. What sucks is that most items aren’t recognized on Google or Amazon. Someone needs to work on the database of all UPC codes and how much those products cost online and in stores. Otherwise this app is worthless.
You got an iPhone 3Gs the very next day? Wow, that’s… not likely. You’re just hellbent on bashing this app aren’t you?
What the heck are you talking about?
Hey I tried the app many times, many products on two different
models of iPhones. 3G & 3Gs. App didn’t work one time on many
tries.
IMO the app stinks.
iphonedude either you are a slowpoke, or you have some sort of agenda. I downloaded the beta version of RedLaser and it installed it on my jailbroken 3G and the thing works pretty damn well. For 95% of the items I’ve tried, it at least gets the bar code number right. The only problem I’ve run into is that sometimes no matching product is found in the database. Those with jailbroken iphones, can look for the free beta version online, and save 2 bucks. Either way it’s prolly still worth it
if everyone else can get it to work and you cant, people wont think the app sucks, they just assume your dumb.
oh lol im such a retard, i didnt know you gotta press the button. works great nvm.
