Today’s Notable iPhone Apps – Thursday July 30th Edition

Today's iPhone app reviews include MobileMe iDisk, Offender Locator, SoundCurtain, and myPenn. MobileMe iDisk is the newest application released by Steve Jobs and the boys at Apple, and it allows MobileMe users to access and share their iDisk files from the iPhone/iPod Touch. Offender Locator allows you to access a detailed list of local sex offenders so you can increase your family's safety. Sound Curtain uses some new technology to mask external background noises so you stay focused. MyPenn (and the other My"College") apps, are social networking applications for university students.

MobileMe iDisk is a new, free application made by Apple themselves. The app allows MobileMe users to view and share the files on their iDisk right from their iPhone or iPod Touch. Simply log in with your MobileMe username and password, and you will be presented with a list of folders and files on your iDisk. Select the files you want to view on your mobile device, and share by simply choosing your recipient…MobileMe will do the rest. Files can be password protected. If you have MobileMe, get it right now!

Offender Locator

Offender Locator utilizes the GPS function on your iPhone to find registered sex offenders living near your current location. You can see registered offenders who live near your friends by selecting a name from your iPhone's contact list. You can click on each offender and view their picture and committed offense. You can also map their address to see how close they actually are. Hopefully your search will come up empty, but it's best to know what's around you so you can be safe and prepared. This is an extremely useful application. There is also a lite version.

SoundCurtain

SoundCurtain is quite an interesting application. The app tries to mask distracting background noises by automatically adapting the volume, pitch, and tone in response to the noises around you. In other words, it tries to block out noise. You can customize lots of settings, and choose the sound playback style. There are mixed reviews, so it really depends on the listener.

MyPenn

MyPenn is part of a series of apps by SplaySoft that are university-specifc social networking apps. MyPenn, as you might have guessed, is intended for UPENN students. The app allows students to post messages, post photos, access college news feeds, access an interactive campus map, and access the college website from within the application. There's also an MIT, Princeton, Ohio State, NEU, NSU, Yale, WashU, Arizona State, Brown, Caltech, Columbia, Emory, Carnegie Mellon, Dartmouth, Harvard, Chicago, Depaul, and John Hopkins version. Just search "my_____" with college name in the blank. The apps are 17+ because there is user posted content.
