Microsoft Declares “THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!”

Redmond has seen the future of mobile app development — and it's in the clouds.

Microsoft OneApp is a new software application that enables feature
phones—commonly found in emerging markets—to access mobile apps like
Facebook, Twitter, Windows Live Messenger, and other popular apps and
games. Now, people around the world who own feature phones will be able
to do more and enjoy a better mobile experience with their existing
phones. Microsoft OneApp will be offered initially through partners in
emerging markets worldwide.

What this means is the OneApp apps (wow, that's awkward to say), in conjunction with partners (i.e. the carrier) will offload much of the processing power and storage needs from the app itself to the "cloud."  That will result in smaller apps and less processing power on the part of the target phone.

Right now, only lucky (?) South Africans on  Blue Label Telecoms can take advantage of OneApp; more launches, and an SDK, are planned around the world "within the next year."
