BlackRa1n Release Notes:
- BlackRa1n is a jailbreak tool, it’ll not unlock your phone
- BlackRa1n will jailbreak 3.1.2 iPhone firmware
- BlackRa1n will work on 2G, 3G, 3GS Phones
- BlackRa1n runs on Windows only (you may have problems running it on windows Vista)
- You need to upgrade your phone to 3.1.2 firmware
Caution Note: If you have your phone unlockedor you are planning to unlock your phone and you are NOT on 3.1.2, this tool is not for you. If you upgrade to 3.1.2 in order to use this tool, you will loose your unlock or/and will not be able to unlock in the future.
We’re tested this tool on all iPhone versions: 2G, 3G and 3GS
BlackRa1n Jailbreaking Guide
NOTE: This is written after new version of pwnage tool has been release. Tools from Dev-Team are more stable and have wider support. Also, if you used Blackra1n to jailbreak and you are having problems with your phone, you can use IPSW created with pwnage tool and restore it back to working order.

Disclaimer: use this blackra1n guide at your own risk.
1. Visit http://www.blackra1n.com and click on windows icon under GeoHot’s picture (gotta admit the whole picture thing is creepy)
2. Accept all the download prompts and start blackra1n.exe after download, it’s not a virus
3. Assuming that your iPhone is on 3.1.2 iPhone firmware, just click on “make it ra1n” button
4. Wait for the process to finish, you should see grayed out button “done, wait for reboot”
5. During reboot you will see GeoHot’s picture again, wait for iPhone spring board to appear.
if BlackRa1n jailbreak was successful, you will see blackrai1n icon.
6. Launch blackra1n if you like to instal Cydia, Rock or Icy
7. For example: if you selected Cydia install you will see download progress bar.
8. After Cydia installation, you should see Cydia icon
9. If you care, you can uninstall blackra1n icon

Blackra1n has been running for well over five minutes and my 8GB 3G is still not unlocked, it seems like the program is just sitting here waiting for something. Has anyone else has this problem before? Running blackra1n on Windows 7 (my friend, who has a 32GB White 3GS just unlocked his with blackra1n a few hours ago), running the program in Windows XP SP 3 compatibility mode, unblocked the program, virus scanning is off, etc. Why the hell would it take about 3 minutes to unlock his 3GS and my 3G is going on 10 minutes and blackra1n is still “running?”
when i jailbroke with blackra1n i was very surprised how quickly it finished, however, i tried using winterboard but it wouldnt change the themes. i uninstalled and reinstalled winterboard but it still wouldnt work.
Is there a reason y?
and can i fix it?
Try running it in administrator, that helped for some
WIFI is disabled and winterboard doesn’t work. Five icon dock doesn’t work either…
Did you install ICY or Rock? Try installing Cydia only and if you need/like others install them using Cydia.
What phone you are running, we tried winter board on 2G, no problems.
If you have problems jailbreaking this with windows 7, just hit properties on blackra1n.exe and choose windows xp as compability mode and it should work fine..
I did this on my 3GS 3.1 (not 3.1.2) and everything worked perfectly. 30 seconds is a high estimate, was more like 15 seconds!
I am on Rogers in Canada and no need to unlock as we don’t have many choices for GSM carriers here.
Installed rock and cydia.. both work perfectly.
WIFI, winterboard, 5 icon dock all work fine.
And also found a neat bug where email passwords can’t be saved. Decided to install 3.1.2 (since there is no additional baseband updates worse than already installed) and jailbroke it again.. this time to a fresh install… The time consuming part is syncing my tunes and movies.
My just says running is there anything else I have to do this is on a 3g
did you get to the step 4 of this how to guide: Wait for the process to finish, you should see grayed out button “done, wait for reboot”
HTe you should see your phone rebooting. if you did not get to that process, try to start blackra1n as admin

If you waited long enough just power your iphone off and start over, you should not have any need to restore. IF that fails follow our guide on how to recover from failed hacks., link is in this how to guide for blackra1n

YOu can jailbreak no issues, but for unlock it’s different sotry. you will need to downgrade you basebad. we will get around to write a tutorial about it. Keep in mind since you need unlock this guide is not for your.
Already did that, running 3.1.2 on my phone.
this tools work on 3.1.2 this is why you do not get an icon. But do not upgrade to 3.1.2 if you care to have an unlock.
Im on windows vista…and it just says running…wont do anything different…and my phone goes into recovery mode..what do i do?
try to run it in compatibility mode. just right mouse click on exe and select proper mode. Better yet, try it on XP

didnt work. i have iphone 3g 16g with 3.1.2 running with vista home premium. after 3 attempts playing around with compatibility features (xp , run as admin etc) it crashed the phone requiring it to be restored… pain… unless ive missed something in the instructions?!?! i.e. phone should be off, antivirus off, itunes on etc? its pretty straightforward from what i could read so didn’t expect it to require restoration…
I’m having the same problem mentioned above. I have OS 3.1.2 and I’ve tried running Blackra1n on Vista and XP. It takes the iPhone into recovery mode and says it’s running, but it doesn’t complete and I don’t get the reboot message.
I jailbroke using vista on a 3.1 3GS and had absolutely no problems at all, thanks isp.com!
try to copy copy blackra1n.exe to c:\ and run blackra1n as administrator
Make sure iTunes is not running

Just in case, got to task manager and look for iTunesHelper process, kill it.
You may want to reboot before running blackra1n.

Cant jailbreak my iphone 3G!
When a click ‘make it ra1n’ and it says ‘going in to recivery mode’ then the phone reboots and the phone shows the itunes/usb-cable pic. Blackra1n says ‘running..’ but nothing happends, i have let it run for over 15 min.
I run blackra1n on Windows XP as administrator and the phone has 3.1.2 running. Whats wrong?
Same aso few people above (on Vista home premium). I copied blackra1n to c:\, ran in in compatibility mode (XP SP2), ran is as an administrator… and then i saw “entering recovery”, my phone displayed recovery picture and it stayed like that for 10 minutes.

Was your 3GS 3.1 “out of the box” or previously jail-broke?
I have 3GS 3.1 otb and a bit skeptical…
This jailbreak caused my 3rd party apps to not open. They try to open and crash in less than a second (almost immediately). The Apple stock apps work perfectly and so do any apps d/l’ed through Cydia.
I only installed Cydia.
Running 3.1.2 iPhone 3GS 32GB.

It worked for me finally. I did notice that it was easier if u tried Jailbreaking with redsnow and then trying to use black rain. This was with Windows Vista 64. I didn’t even have to run it in compatability mode of anything.
Hey I have vista 64 and what i did was I jailbroke it using redsnow first. Then I immediatley went and used black rain without changing anything on it at all and it worked great. prolly took no longer than 15 seconds tops.
Managed to do it today! (on Vista Home Premium, iPhone 3G, 3.1.2 firmwere)
) the blackra1n picture will appear on your screen.
I had the same problem as most – “running” displayed and nothing was happening.
(Make sure iTunes is not running and iTunesHelper is off in task manager)
* Turn you your phone off.
* Connect to USB port.
* Start blackra1n (as normal – no compatibility mode, not as an administrator) – it will say “waiting for phone”.
* Now put your phone in DFU mode (press ‘power’ and ‘home’together. Keep holding both until the apple logo appears, then release ‘power’ but keep holdind home. After some time (it was quite a while for me, I thought I bricked my phone
* From that point it’s just waiting for phone to restart. Then follow the instructions above (instal cydia or whatever you like, etc.)

I’ve been trying this since Monday the 12th and couldn’t get it to jailbreak. And I found these instructions from “PuG” on another site AND IT WORKED.. FINALLY ! ! !
“Been messing about with my 3G 8gb for about half an hour trying to jailbreak it lol.. followed everyones suggestions and nothing worked… THEN i cracked it… Do all the update stuff first then unplug your iphone and reboot it. compatibility mode your blackra1n, RUN blackra1n and click “make it rain”… THEN and only then plug your iphone back into the computer… was over and done in 30 seconds, popped up wit the message telling me my iphone would be jailbroken once it had reboot and the image of the curly haired lad with the wave of iphones popped onto the screen… it rebooted and now its done. Cheers..” In addition I stopped all Antivirus services..

Keep in mind that pwnage 3.1.4 is out at this time and if you jailbreak using that it fixes some problem Blackra1n has.
this doesnt work on 3g, i did everything here…. messed up my phone i had to do a complete restore on itunes lost some stuff…i was good on 3.0 this black ra1n is no that easy… please be serious…wack as hell…
was stuck on running, never saw geohots face, got the messege that it was done and got stuck there, wtf this is not easy dude…

Help!!!! When I power my phone off and then connect it to the USB port it immediately cuts back on. What am i doing wrong??
The tool is utterly useless, on my 3g 16GB I tried all the suggestions but none does work. Still stuck with the bloody Itunes/USB cable image……f***ing hell

I am now on the third try with no luck yet in jailbreaking my iphone 3G 16 Gg with 3.1.2 firmware, 5.6 carrier update. Once I click on “make it rain” it goes into recovery mode with the usb cord poining to the itunes disk, but it stays there. The first time I let it stay there for 40 minutes and the second time for 30 minutes. I am following the instructions above, so do I need to let it sit longer

I have WIndows 7 x64 and a 16gb 3G iPhone. I tried EVERYTHING…then I turned off the Bonjour Service in Windows, reloaded the exe…and bam, presto!
MINE DID THIS, i have a fair amount of tech. knowledge, so i decided to check out the Blackra1n log file. it seems when the Blackra1n is stuck in the Running operation the USB Callback fails, meaning something is blocking your iPhone from receiving the data. i am not even getting a Geohot picture, but if you rstuck in the running process hold the top and menu button on ur phone , the Blackra1n will say you jailbroke but it lies if you have to use this method, im looking for a way around, i tried running as admin same thing, if anybody has any ideas let me know. thanks.

I have a iphone 3g running 3.1.2, and it took me about 5 seconds. I did have to kill all the itunes related applications on task manager.

i successfully jailbroke my 3g with 3.1.2 and 5.11.07 firmware. but i want to remove it because someone wants to buy the phone from me. I hit restore on the phone and now it won’t load past the apple logo. any suggestions? oh and it won’t go into recovery mode either

i just bought a 3gs that i thought was factory unlocked (im new to this)

Every time i try to “make it ra1n” it takes me to itunes and then says some thing like “Ipod is in recovery mode. You must restore. blah blah blah” then i restore, adn same thing again

I found a fix to the ‚ÄòConnect to iTunes screen’.
1. Before Jailbreaking, backup your iPhone
2. Then restore your iPhone to the current software
3. Close iTunes & Unplug your iPhone from USB lead.
4. Open up Blackra1n & Click on ‘Make it Rain’
5. Then and only then connect your iPhone to the USB and in seconds it will be completed.
Took a matter of seconds once I got past getting stuck at the ‘Connect to iTunes’ (recovery mode state) picture.
I did it on iPhone 3GS with the 5.11.07 baseband so a perfect unlock and jailbreak to me

your phone should be on and it doesn’t matter if you have itunes open or not.
