As we mentioned in our Blackra1n/Blacksn0w Jailbreak/Unlock How to Guide, GeoHot made Blacksn0w available via Cydia.
This option is great for the people who have jailrboken their phones but not unlocked or could not unlock it because of 05.11.07 baseband upgrade.
The Blacksn0w installation process is vey simple. Steps after the fold.
1. Open Cydia and install new source by going to Manage menu.
The source URL for the blacksn0w is http://blackra1n.com
2. After blackra1n source install, you will have access to Blacksn0w app.
Click Install Button
3. Confirm installation
4. Wait for installation process to finish
5. After installation make sure to reboot your iPhone in order for unlock to take effect.
Note: if you are on 3.1.2 and your phone is unlocked by Ultrasn0w, do not create trouble for yourself. Enjoy your current unlock, and do not bother with this method.

So due to a hours of experimentation….that i did to save my iphone from being bricked.. i’m stuck at
BB: 5.11.07
OS: 3.0
BL: 5.9
The phone is not activated or anything but it is Jailbroken.
Now i tried INSTALLING blackrain but it says something is missing. Then i saw that it required OS 3.1.
The instructions say just go ahead upgrade using iTunes.
Should i blindly trust Apple (again) and upgrade with whatever IPSW iTunes would give me ? Would blackrain work then ?

No, do not upgrade using itunes.
Use pwnage tool to jailbreak 3.1.2 then install that on your iphone.
Then instal Blacksn0w from cydia, unlock is done.
This is a better method.

This seemed to work great. Very simple.
BUT…after installing BlacksnOw via Cydia my wi-fi capability keeps falling out.
The unlock is successful but it’s almost as if my wi-fi antenna is just “turned off” no matter if I’m turning wi-fi on or off manually.
I’ve completely restored from scratch twice now and re-jailbroken and re-unlocked adn the same thing keeps happening.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any thoughts?
This known issue, try resetting network settings.
Since i’m the lucky guy who got his iphone unlocked (thanks to THIS website <3 )… i have to bring smiles on other faces.
I need to unlock an iphone that is stuck on the picture of usb and iTunes logo. I tried using Pwnage tool but it said No Firmware found. Now i downloaded some custom IPSW’s (OS 3.1 and OS 3.1.2) but that didnt work cuz it gave 16xx errors. I tried to do that in Recovery mode as well as in DFU mode. Any amount of help would be extremely appreciated
Make sure that when you download ipsw it stays in original format some browsers and OSs put zip extention or unzip the file. File should be with ipsw extension.
We recommend doing jailbreak with pwnage tool and unlock with blacksnow
Right now the OS is not working. Its stuck on the Connect to iTunes screen ( iTunes logo and usb stick).
I’ve tried restoring it to custom IPSW OS 3.1 (first using recovery mode and then with DFU mode). Both times it gives 1600 or 1604 error. Then i tried with a custom 3.1.2 OS version and the same problem. I tried pwnage tool-ing it but it said no Firmware found. I actually DLed pwnage tool before and then using it BEFORE i tried these custom restore things but nothing is working

If once you have unlocked with blackra1n rc3 and still continue to have wifi trouble try this it worked for me!
1) intall firmware 3.1.2 through itunes (latest itunes!)
2) now click on blackra1n icon on your desktop and then click make it ra1n.
3) now click on blackra1n icon on your iphone and install cydia.
4) now Launch the cydia and add the following repo “ http://cydia.iphoneil.net/ ” then search for “ pushfix and youtube“ and install. By doing this your push notification bug caused by blackra1n will be patched.
5) now launch cydia and add http://blackra1n.com to sources and then install blacksn0w.
now you should have a unlocked iphone with working wifi and youtube and gps.

Big trouble. Says iPhone is unlocked after reboot but iPhone never reboots. In fact I can not power it on or off …. it is dead.

Hi Jibran… I am having the same problems as you had, can’t install a CFW. iTunes will always return 1600 or 1604 errors. Would you mind explaning how you overcame that? Just bought the phone, and I need someone to shed me some light.

Succeded first unlocking my iphone 3GS 16GB. Then I got the famous problem of wi-fi not working. Tried to restart the iphone which did not work unless I conneced it to the cable. But no wi-fi.
Restarted it again but now the iphone has hanged. Had not removed the Blackra1n yet so what I see now is a picture of geohot. Can not even close it. Can not turn it off completely. And when I connect it with the cable to the computer, it is not being read by the computer and gives the message that the device I have connected cant be recogonised.
Now I am sitting with an unlocked “locked” iPhone and do not know what to do. Is there anyone who can help me?
easy dude, just hold the home button and hold button at the same time for about 15 seconds. your iPhone should restart, and then you can connect it back up to iTunes

i have a 3g iphone and im having problems unlocking it, it is jailbroken already but when i went to downgrade the bootloader with fuzzyband it wouldnt go lower than 06.04. Does anyone know how to correct this problem?

I had trouble unlocking a jaibroken 3GS 16gb os4.01 with baseband 05.13.04. After following all the steps listed above my Phone Bricked. I was really scared but i was able to restore it. I had to go to restore mode and i also had a backup of my contacts. I dont know what the deal is i am just trying to jailbreak and unlock so that i can tether my 3g connection.Can i do that without paying for myWI?
