Uncle Steve did NOT get a lump of coal in his Christmas stocking this year. In fact, according to mobile app analytics company Flurry, the App Store had themselves a green (as in moolah) Christmas, as app download volumes rocketed to 1000% more than usual on Xmas day. This on top of a 51% increase in downloads from November to December 2009.
Interestingly, iPod Touch apps actually overwhelmed iPhone apps this holiday season — which makes sense in retrospect, because more people are gonna give their kids and loved ones iPods, rather than actual phones with that pesky two-year contract, and those same kids drove much of the app traffic.
Android phones also had plenty of holiday cheer to…um…cheer about. While obviously not posting iPhone-style numbers, Android app downloads increased a respectable 22% in the same November-to-December period. Nearly half of those downloads requests came from Motorola Droids.
Again, these are pure download volumes, not sales figures, so extrapolate accordingly.
