Uh, excuse me, Nintendo DS and Sony PSP: be afraid. Be very afraid.
Epic Games recently unveiled a demo in which an iPhone 3GS ran the Unreal Engine 3 — the guts behind console games such as Gears of War 2 and Bioshock. UE3 takes advantage of the OpenGL ES 2.0 available on both the 3GS and third-gen iPhone Touch. (Bad news for older iDevice owners.) You can watch the demo here:
Epic's Mark Rein expects to have the engine available for other platforms in time for the 2010 CES, and plans to make it available to licensees in the very near future. And while the current level of iDevice technology would be overwhelmed by, say, a full Gears of War port, it's not too far-fetched to believe that an iPhone or iTouch a few generations hence could inhale such a hardware-intensive game and not even burp. In which case, the makers of dedicated hand-held gaming devices might themselves feel a bit queasy…
