iPhone’s Augmented Reality – Notable Apps for December 2, 2009: “There’s an app for that!”

Today, we are highlighting four applications that allow you to use the augmented reality capabilities of the iPhone 3GS. Keep in mind: these apps really are ONLY for the 3GS as they require all the components: the accelerometer, the compass, and the camera, in order to function properly.

Hopefully, these will not be the last and that there will be a slew to come!

Twitter 360 – $2.99

We've discussed Twitter applications in a previous Notable App post, however, this is one that you may definitely want to look at: Twitter 360.

Recently Twitter has implemented to ability to "geotag" your tweets, meaning that each tweet can be annotated with GPS location information. This app takes the next logical step by showing the user, using an Augmented Reality functionality, the location from where your last tweet was posted.

Note: this is not intended to be a full Twitter client but to enhance your Twitter experience.

Nearest Tube – $1.99

Tired or boring old London tube maps? This app allows you to see using your phone's camera where the newest tube station is. Yes, the app is only for Londoners, but now that the idea is there and out in the open, it's really only a matter of time before someone comes up with a similar idea for other cities.

Peaks: Augmented Outdoors – $2.99

Peaks solves the age-old problem of "What's the name of that mountain?" Using the app, you point your iPhone 3GS at a mountain and the app will tell you about the mountain. No more scrambling through maps trying to figure out where you and and which mountains are nearby. This app will tell you what mountain you're looking at.

DishPointer Augmented Reality – $9.99 / Pro Version: $19.99

Using DishPointer Augmented Reality, you can find out what satellites are overhead. Point your iPhone 3GS into the sky and you will see the satellites on the display itself. You can discover the satellite settings, current magnetic and true headings and the satellites will move in real time with the image as you adjust your iPhone.
