While everyone was distracted by Wednesday's iPad debut, that same day Apple snuck a change into the iPhone SDK that permitted voice-over-IP calling on the 3G. iCall was first out of the gate to take advantage of this, and now Fring (who already provide VOIP service through Skype for a variety of smartphones) jumps into the fray with a VOIP-ready iPhone app that's usable anywhere you've got a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. (It's actually the same app they've offered in the past, but with the VOIP functionality turned on with Apple's consent.) Here's a demo:
No word yet on when Skype proper will offer an iPhone app of their own…
