“Operator, I’ve Been Cut Off!” More On The Verizon/Nexus One Disconnect

Google's recent announcement that Verizon's next big Android phone would the HTC Droid Incredible — and not, as previously announced by the search-engine juggernaut, a Verizon-flavored Nexus One — has prompted tons of head-scratching and cries of "What actually happened?"

While Vodaphone — the European cell carrier who, with Verizon Communcations Inc., co-owns Verizon Wireless — is rolling out their own Nexus One at the end of this week, the non-arrival of a "V-Nexus" has many wondering if the phone is still a viable piece of technology, or merely a quick-and-dirty attempt at an "iPhone killer."  In fact, analyst Colin Gillis of BGC Partners publicly declared, "Nexus One is a flop. Everyone knows that now."

Verizon Wireless, for its part, now claims it never confirmed or denied the that a CDMA Nexus One was imminent.  Per spokesman Marquett Smith, "Verizon had never made a comment or statement about the product coming to our network. In the beginning, Google made the statement about the product coming to the Verizon Wireless network and we never made comment around it…The company would be open to conversations [on the Nexus One]. We've never closed doors as a service provider."

While Android phones in general are selling well (Google claims 60,000 handsets sold per day, versus 96,000 iPhones), the Nexus One itself is not a market leader.  Google raised eyebrows when it initially bypassed conventional retail channels to sell the handset directly over the Web (either unlocked or with a 2-year T-Mobile plan), and in fact mobile analytics firm Flurry Inc. claims low sales numbers for the device.  Meanwhile, a series of technical snafu's — most recently, Google's admission that the Nexus One's 3G connectivity problems could not be corrected via software upgrades and would therefore not be addressed — hurt the phone's credibility, leaving many early adopters "holding the bag" on a phone Google now claims is only the first wave of their long-term mobile strategy.
