One of the most efficient ways that Apple controls the flow of information and content through the iPhone is through the types of files it supports. Since it limits the type of video files that it allows on the iPhone it forces many of us to actually turn to the outrageously priced digital video copies available at the iTunes Store. The iPhone is made popular by a generation that is much more inclined to rip and convert media files for their own use, so most users are looking for ways to take common WMV files and transform them so they can watch them on their touch screen.
The Windows Media Video format (WMV) is standard for most PC users around the world. This codec is familiar, as are other competing codecs like DivX and MPEG-4. If you want to actually place a video in the WMN codec onto your iPhone you are going to have to go through the process of converting it to a format it will support. To do this you are going to have to employ a converter that will actually do this efficiently. Even the quickest Google search will come up with a number of results, but you want to ensure the quality you should choose a compression program that is a little more professional.
Apple's Compressor can be purchased individually or as part of the Final Cut Suite. This is one of the best video compression applications on the market and can be used easily to convert WMV files for your iPhone or for use in digital video post-production. Start by opening Apple's Compressor and then go to File and select Open. Find the WMV file you wish to convert for your iPhone and select it. From here you are going to need to go up to the top project window and select a target destination. This is where the project is going to head to once it is finished progressing. Select the project in this window and then go to the Destination window and select Target to choose a location. Below you are going to find a Settings menu where you have different codes you can choose for file compression and conversion. Instead of selecting a codec by name you can instead just select one for the iPhone and iPod specific. Go to the Apple Devices specific folder and select one of the two that is selected for the iPod. There are two different file types here that depend on the quality of file types that you want. Drag and drop the setting you want to the project window where the file is sitting. Now you will select to compress the file and it will go through the process and spit out an iPhone ready file.
Handbrake is one of the most used and most respected video conversion programs and is commonly used for ripping DVDs. If you want to use it to convert WMV files start by opening Handbrake and selecting the Format from under the Output Settings. Select MP4 to convert it to your iPhone or just select an iPhone preset, depending on the version you are using. Go to the Source and select the WMV files that you are looking to convert and choose the Destination where you want it to go. If you want to alter the video quality go ahead and select Picture Settings where you can make choices about the quality of the compression. Select Deinterlace to make sure that you do not get horizontal interlacing lines in your video. Once you are done putting in your settings just select Start and allow it to convert your video.
Once your WMV files are converted simply drag and drop the video file onto your Movies section in your iTunes' library. Plug in your iPhone and then select it from the left hand Devices section of your iTunes. Go into the Movies tab and select the video that you added to be added during the sync. After this go through the normal syncing process to add it to your iPhone.
