The flurry of third part Twitter applications for the iPhone have brought us just about every sub-focus that a person could ask for. Somehow this ignores how the base Twitter iPhone application still may be one of the best of the bunch, and that is saying a lot for this free iPhone application. Twitter 3.0 is the new iPhone application from Twitter and it ports all of the basic aspects of the Twitter design to the iPhone in almost perfect harmony.
Twitter's design lends itself to the iPhone format even better than social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace, so in this way it is not hard to keep the basic functions of Twitter in this format. You get a page for a look at the Twitter stream for your account, one for any mentions you may have, one for messages, and one for a search.
In the search section you will also have the ability to look at what is "trending," which is really a key part of the Twitter experience. You can still work with things like Favorites and look at your profile, but do not expect a lot more from Twitter 3.0. This is all fairly basic as Twitter 3.0 is a more general Twitter application that is intended to meet the largest common demographic.
This does not take away from Twitter 3.0, and in a way this may make it perfect for some users. On the other hand, since the Twitter iPhone application model is used to specify your Twitter use it may make sense to try a third party Twitter iPhone application that is better suited to your needs. For a simple Twitter design Twitter 3.0 is at the top of the game, but make sure it Tweets to you.
