Without actually saying it, AT&T has been admitting for some time now that their 3G service in New York City is horrendous. Now, according to the Wall Street Journal, they're actually DOING something about it.
Today, the Death Star threw the switch on a free Wi-Fi hotspot smack dab in the middle of Times Square. Explains Mike Maus, who
oversees AT&T's New York network, "It's a very large data off-load in a venue where traditionally data
would go over our old voice and data network."
The hotspot extends from 45th to 47st Streets on Seventh Avenue. AT&T has hinted it will expand the Wi-Fi trial to three other cities, but did not indicate when or which cities.
