You might have seen our post
earlier today, looking for guinea p…er, volunteers to help us test
the new iPhone 4's FaceTime videoconferencing app.
Unfortunately,
we hit a little speed bump. After restoring our backed-up 3GS apps, we
fired up the new i4, went to start up FaceTime…
…and couldn't find the app. Like, nowhere. Just a big ol' HOLD button where FaceTime should be.
It didn't help that a fellow i4 early adopter had also done a 3GS restore on his phone — and had FaceTime front and center:
Calling Apple support was next to useless: all they suggested was to restore the phone to its native state.
So we're stumped. And we're wondering: is there ANYONE ELSE out there who restored their 3GS apps to their i4 and lost FaceTime? And if so, how (if at all) did they get it back?
Frustrated? There's a (lack of) app for that.
Update: being a fool. FaceTime was off by default on my phone.
go to Settings/Phone/ Turn On FaceTime option

me too! exactly that! I restored my wifes with no problem but she was moving from an older os, not ios 4.
Restoring my backup from my 3GS left me with push notifications that didn’t work. And some other oddity with synching my photos. I decided it was best to setup the phone as new and sync the apps and everything else.
settings – phone – FaceTime on
I restored from a 3gs and no face time icon. My roommate didn’t have his either and he restored from 3g. what is going on???
YOU HAVE TO GO TO SETTINGS> iPhone and turn Facetime on.
Jeff and Justin – that’s just it, we don’t even have the option is settings under phone. Facetime is nowhere to be found.
mine is doing that too. I have FaceTime on but it says waiting for activation
no worries, facetime will work
Sadly, unlike many of you with your 3GS, and being able to turn FaceTime on in settings when you update, I sadly am updating from a 3G. After update, I don’t have the FaceTime, nor is there even the setting in Settings->Phone->FaceTime. Nothing, no trace of it. I guess it doesn’t really bother me, I lose all my text-messages, and notes. Not the end of the world in the scheme of things, but still a pain in the arse!
Apparently this is a bug with Apple restoring from a backup of an old 3G instead of a 3GS (or not restoring from a backup):

you could sync your notes with outlook or apple’s mail application. Then you wouldn’t loose them – except you will have to lose progress in games and settings/data in applications.
Another solution: upgrade your old iphone to OS 4 – then re-restore your Iphone 4, then restore from the newer backup created AFTER upgrading your old device to OS 4.
I was trying to find the FaceTime settings because it has disappeared mysteriously from my iPhone! In the end I found out that its because I have JB my phone and have not done a Cydia update yet.
So folks, if you find that your FaceTime settings is missing after you jailbreak, you can get it back at
