Finally, thanks to the release of the iOS 4 we can tether using our iPhones. Next to multi-tasking ( or near-multi-tasking as the case may be), this functionality has been one of the most sought after features on Apple’s iconic device from jump.
Here’s how you do it:
Go to the Settings app, choose General, then Network, Turn on Internet Tethering.
You may get the option to tether via bluetooth or USB.
That’s for the phone side, but here’s the rub. You actually have to go to the AT&T site and configure and purchase it from them for it to work.
Log into your AT&T account under My Services you will see option to activate tethering
Fair warning, the prices are JUST NUTS. We wish we could activate tethering old days like we did on the 3.0 here.

Both my iPhone 3G and iPhone 4G have tethering enabled with IOS4 without the tether plan.
Here’s how I did it.
1. Starting with 3.1.2 on my iPhone 3G, I used blackrain rc3 to jailbreak and unlock it
2. I then installed the tether hack by going to http://m.peacefulinsanity.com/Tether.mobileconfig from Safari on the iPhone and installed the profile and rebooted. At this point, the 3G running 3.1.2 already has tether capability.
3. Performed a backup in itunes
4. I then upgraded to ios4.0
5. I then used Redsn0w 0.9.5 to jailbreak it
6. I then used ultrasn0w to unlock it.
7. I then did a restore from iTunes and after the restore, tethering was enabled on IOS4 on my iPhone 3G.
I also just picked up my iPhone 4G and although there’s no jailbreak for it yet, by doing a restore on it from a backup of my 3G running IOS4 that is jailbroken and unlocked and with tethering enabled, my iPhone 4G also now has tethering enabled.

Thanks for posting this; I thought I’d lost tethering forever after the debacle of upgrading my 3G to 4.0 (I thought I couldn’t wait for the white iP4) but I tested this and I was tethering again just like I was under 3.1.2! No, what I meant was as soon as I get the iP4 (which I was still holding out for the white iP4 until yesterday’s disappointing news) I was going to do the 2nd part of Fanboy’s steps and try the back up/restore with the non-JB’d iP4.

I don’t know that I can give any more detailed steps than Fanboy…however, something that I do remember when doing this is that my Macbook (OSX 10.6) for some reason would NOT let me do this; the restore kept stalling, leaving my phone bricked. I had to use my WinXP laptop to get this to work. I don’t know if that helps but if you are attempting it on a Mac, try a Win if you have one. If you’re already on a Win, I’m not sure why it’s not working.
…Although, with 4.1 now idk if this will still work…:(

Okay, so just bought my iPhour this past Monday morning and tried the restore steps Fanboy has above…but it didn’t work (on the iP4). I only tried it once (and w/ my Mac, not the WinXP laptop) and while the tether option looked like it was going to initiate for a few seconds, I then got the “contact AT&T” b.s. So about 10 mins later I was jailbroken on 4.1 on the iPhour and paid the $2 for TetherMe

The hack part thru iTunes I get and although I did it differently it works great. The other half is this, when activating the ip4 you aren’t changing your data plan (grandfathered data plan from ip3. So if you leave it there you keep the ip3 data allowable plan rather than a normal (plan new data plan) excluding the right services for it to work.

No, an iPod can’t be used to tether. (it can tether to an iPhone or 3G pad but yu can’t use it as the anchor from which the service derives)
