The Wall Street Journal reports that sources familiar with the matter have informed them that Google may be working on a social network that incorporates social gaming, much like Facebook or Apple's Game Center.
According to WSJ, Google has been talking to several developers of online-based social networking games. If the rumors are accurate, the company has been in contact with Electronic Arts subsidiary Playfish and Farmville maker Zynga. In addition, earlier this month it was reported that Google had invested at least $100 million in Zynga.
Some speculate that it may be a social networking-type service that incorporates games, but when asked whether their service would be similar to Facebook, Google CEO Eric Schmidt answered, "the world doesn't need a copy of the same thing."
Though the service may be web-based, it's not hard to imagine Google directly incorporating their social network with their Android OS as a Game Center rival.
