Yes, you read that right, the savior of iPad apps, long promised as finally dropped. We have to say it is pretty cool.
The first thing we notice, right off the bat is that it only works in portrait mode. Which is unfortunate as many of us prefer landscape. The assumption being it is trying to replicate some part of the original magazine experience.
You can get the navigation bar by touching anywhere on the screen – a very nice touch that's explained on the intro magazine cover.
The very first article has an interactive animation in it – very nice.
The interactive earth quake finder map (below) is pretty cool!
Some pages have images that slide into place as you navigate to them.
Even some of the advertising has embedded video, which we did click on and watch just to see how well it worked. Though we still aren't watching Ice Road Truckers, sorry History Channel.
Other ads have hotlinks that open a pop up window to their website.
There is a lot of interactive video, and only one that seemed a bit uncooperative.
The long and short of it is, the darn thing is pretty impressive. The question is can a magazine put something like this out in a regular, timely manner? If so, then they will rule the roost. We hope this is only the first of many such apps.
If it isn't the future of the magazine apps, then its pretty darn close.
