Phone Call From Waterworld: FaceTime In The Middle Of The Ocean

Even though Philippe Kahn is racing his sailboat from California to Hawaii in the 2010 Pacific Cup, he still needs to communicate with his friends and team members face-to-face.  Thanks to FaceTime and a satellite-fortified Wi-Fi connection, he was able to do just that — smack-dab in the dead center of the Pacific Ocean, thousands of miles from anything resembling dry land.

While video telephony has been a pipedream for the past half-century, it's possible that the combination of Facetime software and smartphones with forward-facing video cameras may be the magic combination needed to make the technology successful at a mass level.  Which means more phone makers have to get with the program — and FaceTime needs to be ported to just about every OS.
