Even though Philippe Kahn is racing his sailboat from California to Hawaii in the 2010 Pacific Cup, he still needs to communicate with his friends and team members face-to-face. Thanks to FaceTime and a satellite-fortified Wi-Fi connection, he was able to do just that — smack-dab in the dead center of the Pacific Ocean, thousands of miles from anything resembling dry land.
While video telephony has been a pipedream for the past half-century, it's possible that the combination of Facetime software and smartphones with forward-facing video cameras may be the magic combination needed to make the technology successful at a mass level. Which means more phone makers have to get with the program — and FaceTime needs to be ported to just about every OS.
