We've already seen the My TV Remote,  a US$10.00 app/dongle combo that turns your iPhone into a universal remote control.  So what would encourage you to spend five times that for a similar package?

How about more things to universally control?  That's the big pitch for Thinkflood's RedEye mini, which the company brags "…comes backed by our online infrared code database, you can control devices even if you don't have the original remote at hand."  They also pack a microprocessor into the infrared dongle, to generate the IR frequencies (up to 60 kHz) that a normal iDevice audio output can't produce.  RedEye works with all iDevices (Pod, Phone, Pad).
