To the surprise of absolutely NO ONE, the pending release of iOS 4.1 didn't fix the "death grip" antenna-bezel problem, as Apple originally claimed it would. All it fixed was how the signal strength would now be "correctly" displayed. In other words, when you short out the antenna, you're getting WAAAAY less signal loss than you originally thought.
As one Gizmodo reader so succinctly put it, "The update will also detect when someone touches
the two antennas together and will automatically pop up a warning and a
link to the Apple Store to purchase a bumper for $30."
