Well, a company has to protect their properties, right? Apple recently filed two trademarks for boxes. That's right, boxes. It's the packaging that their popular iDevices, the iPad and the iPhone come in when you pick it up at the store.
The description names the black and white color scheme of the iPhone 4 box as one of the features of the trademark, while the iPad's claims the blues and the whites of their packaging. Apple does design very beautiful boxes, so maybe they felt it was best to keep the look to their own devices. More likely is that they wanted their distinctive black and white box to themselves in order to prevent copycat color schemes that may confuse casual shoppers. Who knows, either way, Apple trademarked a box.
