CardMunch, Inc. today announced the launch of their iPhone App that allows users to transcribe business cards into their iPhone.
We will be trying this one out as soon as we get a chance, but if the software is anywhere near as accurate as they say it is, this should be an excellent addition to our App collection.
According to the press release, CardMunch takes only three seconds to capture a business card, and they expect their technology to become the standard for users at meetings and conferences.
CardMunch CEO Bowei Gai said via press release, "We decided to go the extra mile by hiring real workers to verify each card because we want to take accuracy to the next level. Traditional technologies only use standard computer-based Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to analyze business cards, which can be wildly inaccurate. Even a 90% accuracy rate is equivalent to one wrong digit in every 10-digit U.S. phone number. And that is unacceptable when it comes to business contacts."
If CardMunch can deliver the accuracy they say it will, chances are it will become an iSmashPhone favorite for media events. They are using a pay-as-you-go system, and the App is right now $2.99 with 10 credits. Though it seems they may be pretty confident in the transcription abilities, as they are offering the App for free for your first five cards.
The App will soon be available for Android and BlackBerry devices, but there is no announced date yet.
We will be checking out the App and posting our impressions this week.

Mountain View, Calif. (Wednesday, August 4, 2010) – CardMunch, Inc. launched its mobile business card transcription service today, offering an unprecedented level of accuracy by using human verification for every business card swiped with an iPhone. CardMunch's proprietary technology platform uses layers of optimizations to produce a perfect transcription, thus making it by far the most accurate service available on the market. Capturing at 3-seconds per business card, CardMunch makes it a breeze for the user to capture one card or one hundred cards. This breakthrough technology is expected to be the standard for business users at meetings and conferences.
"We decided to go the extra mile by hiring real workers to verify each card because we want to take accuracy to the next level", said CardMunch CEO Bowei Gai. "Traditional technologies only use standard computer-based Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to analyze business cards, which can be wildly inaccurate. CardMunch features seamless integration with the iPhone. The user simply points his phone at a business card; CardMunch automatically recognizes, captures, transcribes, and creates the contact in the user's phone. CardMunch also offers dual address books to keep business contacts separate from personal ones. This prevents contacts from meetings and conferences from cluttering up personal contacts. To switch between the two is as simple as a tap of a button. Transcribed business cards and their images are securely backed up on CardMunch servers, and synchronized with the app on the mobile phone.
