With all the hoop-de-do surrounding the iPad as a new paradigm in personal computing, a lot of people forget it's just that: a computer. And a portable one at that.
Deutsche Bank's Chris Whitmore hasn't forgotten that. In a note to clients last week, Whitmore pointed out that, when you add the (huge!) number of iPads sold to sales figures of MacBooks (regular and Pro), Apple is actually the Number 3 portable computer maker in the world. Only Hewlett Packard and Acer make more portables than Apple — but Apple still smokes established laptop sources like Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba and Dell.
More interestingly, even without the iPad, Apple's market share growth in the laptop sector has grown while its competitors shares are dropping off; factor the iPad in, and Apple's market share is blasting off for the stratosphere.
