Some iPhone applications cannot be judged simply on their own merits, but instead by the benefit that the user finds in it. E! Online is the iPhone application port of the E! channel's online presence, which brings celebrity and entertainment news into the public consciousness. E! Online brings far more than the casual lurid curiosity that you may get when glancing at tabloids in the grocery line. Instead, here you get everything you would get from a complete news service, except all content is geared into the more meaningless aspects of the entertainment industry.
The iPhone app itself is modeled after other popular news iPhone apps with a few different tabs that specify the type of media platform the information is going to be channeled in. The primary tab is the News one, which shows a blog like format of leading "news" stories about celebrity break ups or picked-up pilots. You can also dial in to E! Shows, which lets you select from some of the popular programs on E! that have tried to create more of a following through E! Online. The Photos section is pretty self explanatory and will be a great place to go to get paparazzi photos of candid celebrities or red carpet shots. E! Online, as an iPhone app, is everything you would expect it to be.
The presentation is perfect for the content, as it is in most of the larger news based iPhone apps. Most publishers and broadcasters have focused in on a common format, and E! Online is not different. Whether or not this iPhone app has been successful is based entirely on whether or not you respond to this type of reporting, but either way they did it well.
Note: E! Online for the iPhone has had some issues with opening load times, which may distract you a little bit during use. Hopefully this will be repaired soon in new updates.
