Well, our initial thoughts were wrong. During the liveblog we mentioned that the UI seemed almost identical in the new Apple TV and we (as Apple TV users ourselves) were glad that things weren’t changing too much. Sorry for any confusion that may have caused. However, we do share that disappointment.
Today, it’s been confirmed that the older Apple TV will not be able to support all the features of the new system. Features such as Netflix and those 99-cent TV show rentals. In other words, the old Apple TV will stay just the way it is.
There is a bit of a silver lining to this news. The older Apple TV can still be hacked, because we already know how. It may take a while before any major hacks appear for the newer model. Plus, owners of the original Apple TV still have a ton of hard drive space. Maybe we can make the best of it.
For those of you who own the current model, and are feeling a bit down, have no fear. We will prove to you that you can get all the great content you want with your old Apple TV. Standby for some How Tos over the next few days.
