An SEC filing by the Rovi Corporation indicated that they and Apple have entered a multi-year agreement. According to the filing, Apple will license intelectual property from the other company, but terms are being kept out of the public eye:
Rovi Corporation (the “Company”) announced today that it has entered into a multi-year agreement with Apple Inc. whereby Apple shall license intellectual property from the Company. The specific terms of the license agreement are confidential.
Rovi is a company that in their words, "offers an integrated range of products that enable consumer electronics manufacturers, service providers….to deliver a robust digital entertainment experience for consumers."
They mention content, user-friendly searches that help TV viewers quickly find content, etc. It's also reported that they maintain a database of metadata on TV shows, music and movies. Of course, with Apple's second attempt to push into the living room, this comes as no surprise.
