Above is the PlayStation Phone protoype, the device we heard about a while back. It seems to carry the PlayStation branding (and the face buttons look rather familiar…much like the PlayStation layout), but it’s running on Gingerbread (Android 3.0) and is reported to have a custom Sony Marketplace for purchasing applications and games.
The phone is loaded with a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655, 512MB RAM, 1GB ROM and looks to be about the size of the PSPgo. The device supports microSD cards.
If the reports are accurate, it’s coming soon–perhaps late 2010 or early 2011. We aren’t sure how similar the library will be to what is on the PSP, but it will be interesting if Sony goes that route. As we know the PSPgo wasn’t exactly the most successful handheld on the market.

Interesting concept. Hopefully the software will be up to scratch.
I’m surprised to see Sony using something open sourced. I guess this puts the squash on those rumors of Apple merging with Sony….
Its so cool to have one but considering as a phone? Never. Who would ever want an incoming call in the middle of a game.
