While at Game Developers Conference Online (GDC) in Austin, TX iSmashPhone dropped by the headquarters of developer Electric Bat to check out their latest project, Weblords Shattered Domains.
First, a little background…
Weblords is a new online game in which players join up and fight for supremacy on the Internet. Players can create tier hero, build empires and expand their armies in order to become powerful and overtake websites.
Players conquer websites by being signed into Weblords and navigate to the website you want to take over. The better the website's traffic rank, the harder it would be to take over. For instance, Google would be a very difficult site to dominate, but a random site with little to no traffic would be a breeze. Nothing happens to the website, but the user can navigate to it and the site owner may notice a spike in traffic if the battle is significant enough.
It's also on the iPhone
The iPhone App offers direct integration with the the web-based application. The interface is similar and you can do all the things on the iPhone and iPad that you can do through the web app. In fact, the iPhone App allows for more because you can battle at any time. The iPhone becomes especially useful for defending your claimed websites. That's right, defending.
When different armies want to claim ownership of the same website, it's war. The two players must battle it out, with the current owner having to defend against the other's forces. The iPhone becomes useful in this scenario because users can have the game notify them if their website is under attack. From there, they can go defend their territory before it's overtaken.
It's a nice merging of their web application and the iPhone App, and it's nice to know that players can play the game entirely on their iOS device if they so choose.
It's free-to-play
The game is free-to-play and the iPhone App is available at the App Store. Users have the option to pay for additional features such as constructing more than one building at a time. This is useful for acquiring units and resources faster.
We've started our own Weblords account and are testing it out. Right now, we are going through the training and have already overtaken a few websites. Soon, we will be working on taking over iSmashPhone.
