It’s a World of Rumors on the Internet
Tech news is full of rumors. Some manage to be true, while others are either A) Totally false or B) End up becoming cancelled projects. Sometimes its fun to speculate, especially right before a major press event. But there are some rumors that never seem to go away. Many if them even start as speculation before major product launch (small iPad) and some immediately after (Verizon iPhone) and continue for years.
Some of these things are probably never happening, others are guaranteed. Either way, they are all things that the internet is sick of hearing:
1) Small iPad, iPad Mini or iPad Nano
To some, the idea of a small iPad may sound great. It’s somewhere between the size of the current model and an iPod Touch and the price could sit comfortably in the middle. Steve Jobs has said it’s going to happen, but you don’t have to take his word for it. We just have to wonder if it’s necessary at this point. We’ve mentioned in the past that the iPad is about as small as the device should be and that going any smaller would just be venturing close to iPod Touch territory, which is more like a step back. Sadly, we don’t think the iPad 2 will come in a small edition.
2) Verizon iPhone
Based on what We have heard, this one is going to happen. Chances are that it’s happening next year. We realize that by writing about it, we are part of the problem, but news is news and it’s our job to cover it. That said, we’ve been hearing about it since what feels like the beginning of the iPhone. This year the rumblings have been much louder than usual, so we are definitely expecting to hear an official announcement. Sadly, rumors aren’t going to make it come any faster. We will likely see a press event before we see an iPhone 5 or a Verizon iPhone.
3) iPad 2 Will Have a Camera
This one is another one of those that is so likely to happen it’s almost not worth calling a rumor. We’ve seen Apple add cameras to all their other devices and go so far as to drop iSight and rename everything the FaceTime camera. That just shows how strong of a push the application is getting from Apple. Putting it in desktop computers made sense in that respect, and the next logical step is to put a camera on the iPad. We don’t need rumors at this point to convince us that the iPad 2 will come loaded with FaceTime.
4) Touchscreen Laptops and desktops
This one has been rumored for a very long time, and most of it because of the iPhone. We’ve even seen patent applications filed for touchscreen laptops and desktops. While we aren’t saying it will never happen, we are pretty sure it won’t happen soon. During their most recent event they explained their reasoning behind that, and they say that holding the arm up continuously becomes tiring after a while. We can be sure that they would rather find a less strenuous way to do this before it becomes a consumer product. Still, Jobs had no problem with saying that the company had experimented with the idea a long time ago.
5) Apple TV Apps
Who knows if this one is happening. It’s entirely possible, because we’ve seen it done with jailbreak before. Still, Apple seems happy with just providing some basic content. Personally we are waiting to see more from it and see more hacking before committing to buying one, even if the asking price is just $99.
And the Rumors Keep on Coming!
Rumors will keep happening, and most are fun. We are sure that future rumors will talk about the iPad 2 and how it uses fingerprint recognition or that the iPhone 5 will do your laundry and pack your kids’ lunch then drive them to school (Multitasking at its best).
After having said all that, it’s time for us to head out and try to find more iPhone rumors and news.
