As the recent (and recently viral) Windows Phone 7 “Really?!?” commercial has pointed out, being glued to your cell phone 24/7 is not a Good Thing. At the same time, plenty of Twitter users would like to know if and when their name pops up on the site, whether it be a reply, a follow recommendation, or just a random mention.
Twitter, believe it or not, feels for you. So the recently updated Twitter for iPhone & iPad app supports push notifications of @mentions. Basically, when your name crops up anywhere on the social network, you’ll get an SMS alert and/or an on-screen indicator; you can then jump into the app to read the tweet that name-drops you. The updated app also includes a “@mention” menu option to list your most recent mentions.
Blackberry users are probably experiencing some deja vu right about now: their Twitter app has had this capability for quite a while. And for Android/WinPhone users whining “What about us?” — patience, grasshoppers, Twitter is burning the midnight oil to update your phones’ apps as well.
Still just using text messaging on your phone to Tweet? You can zip over to http://twitter.com/devices (and optionally register your handset’s phone number, if you haven’t yet done so), then select which kind of text notifications you’d like: regular tweets, direct messages, and/or mentions, either from people you follow or any user.
