Cable news giant CNN has (finally) released its iPad app, long after other TV news outlets such as ABC and BBC — but like those channels, CNN's app is free to download and advertiser-subsidized. Users will be able to view streaming video, share stories via email or social networks, even save stories for offline viewing.
The (non) price-point of the iPad app flies in the face of current "dead tree" media thinking, which treats the iPad experience as "premium content" and charges accordingly.
So what about CNN's existing iPhone app? Originally priced at US$1.99, it still managed to snag two million downloads. Not satisfied with those numbers, CNN cut the price in half. Now, in conjunction with the iPad app's release, the iPhone app is a freebie, too.
