The iPad makes a great entertainment device. Not only does it play games, it allows you to watch movies and TV shows. Apps like Netflix and the ABC Player are two favorites for that reason alone. It really is a great way to watch movies. What's more, Apps like Netflix work on an iPod Touch and an iPhone as well. Yes, it's a small screen, but it still looks great, and it's a nice way to watch a movie without disturbing others.
Then there are Apps that stream music, Apps like Pandora radio. Entertainment-type Apps are some of our favorites.
Let's take a look at the ones we love the most:
1) Netflix (free)
This is the ultimate entertainment App on iOS. If you have a Netflix account and an iOS device, you need Netflix. If you have an iOS device, but no Netflix account…you need to consider jumping on board. If anything, for the streaming service alone. Not every movie is available for instant viewing, but there is enough there for everybody, and you are sure to find many hours of enjoyment with it. It's also great for families who don't want to blow nearly 100 bucks (No joke, have you tried taking a family of five to the movies and buying snacks these days?) every time they go to the movies.
2) ABC Player (free)
ABC player offers streaming for many of the network's top TV shows. While you definitely won't find as much as you will on Netflix, you will be happy to know that this service is free. If you don't mind a short ad between show segments. Either way, it's not a bad deal.
3) Flixster (free)
In case you do decide to make it a movie night at the theatre, you can check out this App. It shows you what's in your area and when. You can check out Rotten Tomatoes reviews, see what's being released on DVD or what's going to be in theaters in the near future. For instance (and this is a bit embarrassing…I think) we just opened the App and realized that there is a third Narnia movie. Not that we plan on watching it, but hey, we can check out show times and a trailer all from one simple App.
4) Pandora (free)
Pandora Radio is a sweet free App for streaming audio and music. It's become truly useful with the multitasking, which makes it possible to run the App in the background while you do other things. This is the way it was meant to be used. If you like music, you should definitely check this App out.
5) IMDB (free)
This one is for the movie fan, or for those moments when you recognize an actor in a movie but aren't quite sure if it's him. You jump in IMDB and check. It's pretty awesome, and you will often find yourself jumping around looking up random movie trivia and learning what other movies various actors were in. This App has consumed several hours of our time, and we're not complaining.
The great thing about iDevices is that you can take them just about anywhere. If you happen to stop at a coffee shop or burger place with free wifi, you can connect to the network and enjoy a bit of Netflix. Traveling? You can watch something while in the hotel room rather than have to find something interesting on TV when you don't know what all the channels are. Just make sure you stop at a place with free wifi.
