It was being widely-reported that Cydia may have landed an advertising deal with Toyota. This seemed to show the immense popularity of the jailbreak community. Well, it turns out that’s not the case. Word comes direct from Jay Freeman (Saurik) who contacted website 9to5Mac directly through the comments section to clarify:
“To be clear, this article states that ‚Äö√Ñ√∫Cydia lands advertising deal‚Äö√Ñ√π, which is misleading. If there is an ‚Äö√Ñ√∫advertising deal‚Äö√Ñ√π (I am not certain there is; I have only heard of an official posted theme), it is between ModMyi and Velti (the advertising agency used by Toyota), not between Cydia and Toyota.”
Apple Didn’t Like It
It turns out that the ads were running through ModMyi.com, within Cydia. We have also learned that Apple isn’t happy with Toyota about this. According to a post at Modmyi.com, a representative at Velti (Toyota’s ad agency) said they would have to pull it down. Here is an excerpt from that post:
“On the phone, he explained Apple had contacted Toyota and requested they remove the theme and stop the advertising campaign. They (Velti) in turn contacted me relaying the message. The reason Velti listed for the removal request of the theme emailed through our dev portal was “Toyota‚Äö√Ñ√¥s making us take it down‚Äö√Ѭ∂” Toyota had agreed to do so to “maintain their good relationship with Apple,” our Velti contact told me on the phone.”
Well Toyota stopped running the themes at Apple’s request, because they wanted to maintain a good relationship. It’s hard to fault them for that, Apple devices probably get them a lot of ad views. Still, what the heck, Apple? Don’t be a douche.
