The iPhone 4 and a few games from the App Store have made their way into the Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer's Edition book.
Believe it or not, the iPhone 4 is considered a gaming system as it has earned itself the title of "Fastest-Selling Portable Gaming System." This is thanks to it's strong June 24, 2010 launch in which it sold 1.5 million.
It does make a comparison to the Nintendo DS and PSP, but there is a bit of a difference as both of those systems were unproven at the time. The iPhone name was already a strong brand and the iPhone 4 was a highly-anticipated device with a game and app library to entice consumers.
As for software, Apple pulled the Guinness record for "Most Popular Application Marketplace," and some of their games have also been added into the book. Angry Birds earned a spot as "Top Paid-For App Store Game in the Most Countries." Popcap's Plants vs. Zombies is the "Fastest-Selling iPhone/iPhone Strategy Game." Meanwhile, Tap Tap Revenge is the "Most Popular iPhone Game Series," according to the world records book.
Most of those are exclusive to the mobile space with the exception of the "Fastest-Selling Portable Gaming System" title. That one puts it at a level with many of the other gaming devices we've seen. Still, it's not clear how many of those were purchased by users who wanted to use the device for games. A Nintendo DS or a PSP is purchased exclusively for gaming content. iPhones can be purchased primarily as a phone. Still, an amazing feat and games are definitely the most popular part of the App Store.
