Why Jailbreak Your iPhone? We’ll Give Ya 16 more reasons of what we have already showered!
For most of the users round the world, Jailbreaking had never made any sense, even for me it was the same till the time I got my very own iDevice.¬†Jailbreaking is one of those things that may not make much sense until you do it. It can often sound complicated or difficult, but rest assured, it’s a very easy process. That said, many may wonder why they should jailbreak. Does it add anything? Is it worth it? Will Apple come down from the sky and destroy me where I stand? One thing to note, while Jailbreaking has been officially termed as technically legal, it would void your warranty.
Jailbreak is also perfect for those who don’t give a damn about the warranty or simply have bought it from the gray market. A number of tools are available online to jailbreak your device with one of the best from the Chronic Dev Team. Download the latest version of GreenPois0n which is an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4/3GS, iPod Touch 4G/3G/2G and iPad.
While we have detailed much, we might still want to add that not much has been said regarding the Jailbreak but today we bring a bucket full of reasons you might want to try jailbreaking.
Cydia is a service on jailbroken iOS devices that lets users search and download Apps. It’s compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The simplest way to describe it is to call it an app store for jailbroken devices. Like Apple’s App Store, you will find some free and some paid programs.
After installing the Cydia app store, which is really where all the real action is when you jailbreak, you basically have access to the Black-Market App Store. Developers have been working out apps for users just as devs made it possible to create a third-party Google Voice app, even before Google could and sold it in the Cydia store.
A healthy number of apps are available on the Cydia store either free or on a low cost. You’ll be able to find all those type of stuffs which Apple has never or nor will approve over its iDevices. Moreover, you would also find thousands of games of Sega, Nintendo and Playstation systems which the developers have managed to create emulators.
2) MyWi –$19.99
MiWi is an App that can turn your iPhone into a mobile hotspot. For all those who have been a bit jealous of Android users who now have a Wi-Fi Hot Spot option can now download and install this simple app. The MyWi only works with the iPhone 4/3GS/3G and iPad 3G eventually turning your phone into a portable hot spot giving users the access to connect with other devices like laptops and phones to your iPhone and surf the net.
Once activated, your iPhone would act as a WiFi router to which you can connect your laptop or phone. Moreover the MyWi gives you the option of securing your connection by adding a password. One little disadvantage of using this app, it would drain your battery rather quickly so it is advised that you connect it to a power source.
3) My3G – $3.99
This smart little app will trick your iPhone into thinking that it’s on WiFi when on 3G. In return it would allow you to watch high-def YouTube videos, use Skype, Fring, Facetime and other VOIP apps over the 3G network.
The app was made possible and has been able to mark success as Apple limits Facetime video calls to iPhone that are connected to a WiFi only network and secondly it limits apps that are downloadable over the air to 20 MB, which are larger and only be downloade when the iPhone is connected to WiFi.
1. In-App popup request to enable/never ask for My3G to be enabled for that app
2. In-App indicator when My3G changes the network from 3G to WiFi
3. Ability to select which apps are My3G enabled and not
4. Default Apps Рno configuration for the most popular apps!
5. SBSettings Toggle! You can temporarily enable My3G for all apps or toggle back using your defined Apps list
4) Rotation Inhibitor – Free
iOS4 users on newer devices like the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4 don’t need this. Those on an iPhone 3G, will appreciate this. It’s just what it sounds like. It locks the orientation on your device so that your screen doesn’t rotate while you read in bed. Rotation Inhibitor is a toggle for SBSettings, with the toggle allowing you to turn on/off the auto-rotate feature. After witnessing the toggle in Cydia, I got a lil over excited as at many events it was a real pain when the screen switched to landscape mode or portrait when not needed.
5) Infiniboard – $1.99
Released by chpwn, the tweak gives you the ability to scroll your SpringBoard upwards and downwards basically adding the ability for Vertical scrolling. While most of you are looking forward for a free app to fix all this, developers do want a small share. After you Jailbreak, the app can be purchased by Cydia for $1.99.It’s a neat little party trick.
6) Poof – Free
This is pretty cool. You can hide and unhide applications on the springboard individually. It was mainly developed to customize as there was no way to hide/show apps. Apps are hidden by adding the hidden tag to the app’s Info.plist.Maybe you just don’t want someone looking through certain apps on your iPhone. This is the App that will prevent that. It works for both App Store and Cydia applications.
7) Privacy – Free
This is another one that’s great for privacy. It prevents Apps from sending usage statistics to App providers and developers. Then again, some of those statistics may help them make better Apps.
8) MXTube – Free
Ever find one of those videos you really like, and want to be able to view offline? This App will let you download YouTube videos onto your iPhone in both normal and higher quality encoding from YouTube directly. Developed by a young teenager called Max, the app would present you with a menu bar displaying four options; Featured, Search, Videos and Downloads.
Obviously the search would allow you to search and once you have found the particular one to download, just tap on it. This would bring up a pop-up in which you would be provided three options for downloading; High, Low or Both. Once selected, the download would begin and will show up in the Downloads section in the lower menu bar. Furthermore, you can see the size of file and can even opt to cancel a particular download.
9) Open SSH – Free
Connect to your iPhone over wifi and transfer files from the computer to the iPhone. It’s important to know that this application has no icon. You would be required to have your device jailbroken in order to SSH to work into your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
After installed, the device will display the cydia app which is added to your Home Screen with the rest of the applications.
10) Five Icon Dock – Free
Displaying just the four icons, sometimes ain’t enough, even though the manufacturer has left empty space for some smart reason obviously being cleanliness. Why wait, specially when you need to fill that space with one of your own folder. Five Icon Dock is a free app available via Cydia which let’s you add the fifth icon in the dock. With this, you now have the ability to quickly access an app without having to return to the home screen.
11) SBSettings – Free
One of the best app you’ll come across available through Cydia. SBSettings is an app, more like a drop down HUD which can be accessed by simply swiping your finger over the top status bar and you can toggle the states of WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, Brightness, etc. Moreover, it displays your IP address in case you’re connected to a WiFi router.
12) StayOpened – Free
Remember everytime you download an app from the app store, the store closes and takes you to the app being installed? Maybe it looks fine to you if your intentions were to download a single app. But time to time it can get really annoying, especially when you opt to download multiple apps and would not wish your device to drag you out of the app store each time. This simple app let’s you continue with your browsing in the app store while your downloads take place in the background.
13) BiteSMS – Free
BiteSMS adds more functionality to the SMS pop up you receive. Instead of just the “Close” option, you would now have the feature to reply, call, etc, exactly where the pop up itself is displayed. The app is currently available for free through Cydia.
14) WinterBoard – Free
Wish to change the background wallpaper of your iOS device, WinterBoard is a one stop solution for customizing the look and feel of your iPhone. Till date, Apple does not allow users to install custom themes on the iOS devices for which this app has been designed to cater all of the users. Choose amongst a hundreds of themes, icon packs, wallpapers, etc. to bring a brand new customized look over your iOS device.
15) Frash – Free
Sadly, all iOS devices come disabled with Flash. Don’t know why Apple has a big issue with the Flash people but what we think, it wishes to save the battery life of the device. Does this mean there is a battery issue with iOS device? Let’s not get to that, for now.
If you still wish to see flash ads in Safari then you might want to give Frash a try. Once again, its a Cydia app which basically enables Flash on your iOS device. One thing to note which we noticed, it does consume a bit more battery.
That’s just a few of the Apps
Of course those are just Apps that are available to jailbroken devices. Jailbreaking also gives you many other abilities, such as connecting your device to your computer remotely so you can transfer files over wifi, changing your iPhone’s theme and plenty of other neat tricks. We even wrote a tutorial that shows you how to remotely import a movie to your iPad (it would work the same with any iDevice, in case you’re wondering) In other words, things your iPhone may not do now.
