We recently learned that Apple, Microsoft and RIM, along with three other tech companies were approved by the courts for the purchase of 6,000 patents from the bankrupt Nortel. Not to mention, there are several patents owned by Microsoft that Android makers have to license in order to sell their handsets. This goes back to Steve Ballmer’s comment saying that Android isn’t free because patents must be licensed out to manufacturers.

Forbes says that this could all mean big money for Microsoft. Not only through licensing, but because most companies will choose to settle rather than take the legal battle too far. Furthermore, analysts predict that the comapnies that purchased the Nortel patents, Microsoft is in that group, will use those against Google.
