New Macs Introduce Lion Recovery

The new MacBook Air and Mac Mini have a new feature called Lion Recovery. Now users can restore their wiped hard drive by connecting direct to Apple’s servers and running the install. Here’s Apple’s description:

“Built right into OS X Lion, Lion Recovery lets you repair disks or reinstall OS X Lion without the need for a physical install disc. Since Lion Recovery is built into your Mac, it‚Äö√Ñ√¥s always there when you need it. Even if you don‚Äö√Ñ√¥t need it, it‚Äö√Ñ√¥s good to know it‚Äö√Ñ√¥s there. And you don‚Äö√Ñ√¥t have to search through original packaging to find install DVDs to get your Mac back up and running.”

This was a concern for many, because Lion is currently only available through the Mac App Store, no one knew what they would have to do to recover their system. Anyone on a pre-Lion Mac will have to install Snow Leopard and then update to Lion. That’s a bit of a pain, but it’s also been reported that Apple will be selling Lion on a USB stick as well.
