According to a report from taiwan-based news site CENS, Pegatron will be manufacturing the next iPad (some say iPad 3, others say iPad HD). It’s unclear if longtime Apple partner Foxconn is not getting the contract this year, if reports are accurate. It’s also widely reported that Pegatron has is contracted to built 15 million iPhone 5 units for Apple.
Some speculate that it may be partly due to the recent Foxconn explosion and the highly-publicised worker suicides. Apple may not want to rely solely on Foxconn for that reason. It makes sense to keep more than one manufacturer on the table just in case of unexpected demand, as was the case with the iPad 2. Production was slower than what consumers were able to purchase the tablet.
