The Perils of Beta Testing – iOS 5 Beta 1 in Endless Activation Loop

Okay, we will admit that this one is mostly our fault. Still, this is one of the many reasons you don’t want to run beta software on your iPhone if you’re not experienced with the handset. As you can see from the video above, we were running an old version of the iOS 5 Beta. Beta 1, to be exact., which from the looks of it, expired three months (it was released June 6th. Today is August 5th) after being seeded out to developers. See what happens.

We were stuck in an activation loop. We never updated and it’s currently at Beta 4 (though it was reported that some had issues obtaining that one). Yeah, our phone can no longer be activated and iTunes gives us an error message (below). Beta testers beware–if you didn’t update, you will have this issue when your version expires. If that you are still on Beta 1, that’s today.

iTunes iOS 5 Beta Message

In order to correct this, all you have to do is download the latest iOS 5 beta, which is version 4. If you have a developer’s license, you simply go to Apple’s developer page to do this.

iOS 5 is expected to launch this fall and is likely to see a release alongside the Apple’s iPhone 5.
