Believe it or not, many users have probably never seen this screen. The iPhone 5 is rumored to introduce a much improved voice control feature.
The iPhone has some very basic voice controls. Rather, iOS has some very basic voice controls. You can make a call, play some music and do a few other things with it. We described it here. It doesn’t to a lot, and the voice recognition can be a bit hard to get along with at times. At least it’s there. It’s just not great.
Apple may be fixing that, according to recent reports.
Voice Control. Improved. Introducing “Assistant”.
Apple hasn’t been known for stellar voice control in iOS. That may change soon if the recent rumors turn out to be true. That purchase of Siri a good while back may finally be coming into use.
Here is a portion of the original report:
One can say make appointment with Mark Gurman for 7:30 PM and Assistant will create the appointment in the user’s calendar. On noting events, Assistant also allows users to set reminders for the iOS 5 Reminders application. For example, a user could say “remind me to buy milk when I arrive at the market.” Another example would be integration with the iOS Maps application. A user could ask: “how do I get to Staples Center?” and Assistant will use the user’s current location via GPS and provide directions.
On top of that, you can send SMS messages as well. All based on voice. For instance, the example used is “send a text message to Mark saying I’ll be running late to lunch!” and you will send that message. We imagine that iOS 5’s twitter integration will also be something to see with voice control.
One More Thing?
This is said to be the big new feature coming to the iPhone 5, or perhaps iOS 5. Still, it will be likely demonstrated on the iPhone 5. We’re just hoping that the feature is integrated into older handsets as well. Our iPhone 4 is still kicking.
And Wolfram Alpha?
Also said to be coming to the iPhone is the implementation of Wolfram Alpha. Think of it as a question and answer center. Ask it a question such as “How many feet are in a mile?” or “Where was JFK assassinated?” and the utility will answer your question. Nice.
Is Software the New Selling Point?
No doubt the iPhone 5 will be a sight to behold. However, it’s interesting that Apple’s last press conference focused only on software. If this is in fact the big feature of the iPhone 5, it’s worth noting how much of a role software is really starting to play in selling more handsets. Maybe the fancy camera and fast processor will be a selling point to most of us, but if this is actually Apple’s killer feature, it just shows how important iOS features are as well.
