When the iPhone 4S was announced, much of what we heard around the internet was nothing but disappointment. Perhaps it won’t persuade iPhone 4 owners. Besides, many of them are likely still on contract for another year. However, that’s not to say that there weren’t’ plenty of people willing, and ready, to upgrade.
According to AT&T, iPhone 4S pre-orders surpassed anything they’ve had in history. The handset saw 200,000 pre-orders in the first 12 hours (via CNET). That’s roughly 16.7k per hour, from AT&T alone.
All the jokes about the ‘S’ in iPhone 4S being for “sad,” “stupid” or any other negative word that begins with an S that you can think of don’t hold the same meaning right now. We’re sure that Apple, Sprint, Verizon and AT&T think the S stands for “splendid” right now, because that’s how pre-order sales are apparently going for them.
We all figured demand would be high early this morning when trying to pre-order early. As we wrote early today, Apple servers were bogged down. Now AT&T has just confirmed it. Demands were high.
We’ll be looking out for other sales numbers as they come.
Update: New reports say that Sprint has sold out
