Hands-On Review: iHelicopter

Hey, Bunky, been lusting after one of those AR-Drone iPhone-controlled RC helicopters — but blanching at the US$300.00 price tag?

iHelicopter feels your pain.  They offer a more “traditional” 2-blade, compact (19 cm/7.5 inch), mall-kiosk-style chopper for a fifth of the AR-Drone’s price (US$59.95 plus free worldwide shipping) as a way to “get your wings” without breaking the bank — or, for that matter, your new toy copter.  Because you will crash it the first few attempts at flight.  That’s just Murphy’s Law in action…

All kidding aside, operation is a snap.  Both the iHelicopter and its transmitter are charged by plugging into any USB port.  Download the flight-control app to your iDevice, plug the transmitter into the headphone jack, crank the volume all the way up, and launch that sucker skyward.  If you’ve had prior experience with RC copters, you’ll be pleasantly delighted by the app’s far more sensitive controls (let’s face it: most low-end RC controllers take a LOT of practice to achieve smooth aerial maneuvers).  Plus, the app has three selectable transmit channels, so you and two friends can fly a squadron of iHelicopters at the same time.
