This bit of news was originally caught via two sites in Germany, they reveal a mysterious iOS app from Apple that was added to the App Store. It’s called GameStore. According to reports, it offers several racing-themed in-app purchases (such as nitrous and race tracks) but there is no additional functionality.
The app costs 99 cents, and there are currently three in-app purchases that are priced from 99 cents to $2.99. However, more exploration showed that there are reportedly additional items that can ran as high as $26.99, but those aren’t found within the app itself.
The only real guess right now is that it’s something used for internal testing that was pushed live during WWDC 09 (according to the post date) and was somehow, accidentally, put in the public eye. There’s nothing in the app for anyone since whatever game the in-app purchases were for does not seem to exist.
