Apple is again rumored to be preparing to release a 7-inch iPad mini. This rumor crops up every time we expect a new iPad to debut. We highly doubt that Apple has such a tablet planned. Again, Steve Jobs always said that Apple would not release such a device.
The story comes from a Computerworld interview in which analyst Ezra Gottheil said that he expects Apple to announce the device this March alongside the iPad 3. Here’s what he said, “I believe that’s always been in the plan. Actually that’s a good form factor for some users, and although they will also charge a premium above other similar-sized tablets, they want to protect that price flank.”
We’re not sure how true this is, but we doubt it. We just don’t think it’s happening. The only evidence we have supporting such an idea is that there is now a market for smaller, cheaper tablets (the Kindle Fire comes to mind) and that Apple may now realize the importance of such a device. Even then, we doubt that this rumor is true. Still, it’s just one more thing to add to the pile.
